Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Bring your expertise as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist to make a real difference within an educational environment near the Mountain View and San Jose, California area. This full-time, contract opportunity for the
NSY 26/27
term allows you to empower students with visual impairments to achieve increased independence, confidence, and community navigation skills.Key Qualifications:
Certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or eligibility to obtain credentials within California Bachelor's or Master's degree in Orientation & Mobility or related discipline Prior experience supporting K-12 students with visual impairments is strongly preferred Strong communication and collaboration abilities with multidisciplinary school teams, students, and families Up-to-date knowledge of assessment tools, adaptive technology, and individualized educational planning Commitment to supporting educational access and independence for all studentsResponsibilities Include:
Conduct comprehensive orientation and mobility assessments for students with vision loss Develop and implement individualized instructional plans tailored to each student's learning needs and strengths Teach safe and effective indoor and outdoor travel skills, use of white canes, and public transportation orientation Collaborate with teachers, specialists, and families to integrate mobility goals into the broader educational plan Consult and provide training for faculty and staff on best practices for supporting students with visual impairments Regularly track student progress and adapt strategies to promote maximum independence This is a fulfilling, high-impact position where you'll act as a vital resource for students on your caseload (details to be posted within 24 hours).
