Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract Step into a rewarding contract opportunity working near Somerville, TX, where you'll serve as a dedicated Orientation and Mobility Specialist. Make a meaningful difference by empowering students with visual impairments to develop confidence, independence, and essential travel skills for academic and everyday success.
Key Qualifications:
Certified as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) Previous experience working in school settings or with children preferred Comprehensive understanding of best practices for mobility and orientation training Strong communication abilities to collaborate with teachers, families, and support staff Capacity for developing and implementing individualized instruction plans Flexibility, patience, and a positive attitude in supporting students with varying needs
Responsibilities:
Conduct assessments to determine students' mobility strengths and needs Develop and deliver tailored orientation and mobility instruction, fostering safe travel skills in both school and community environments Teach students to effectively utilize mobility devices, such as canes, and reinforce the use of remaining senses Coordinate with educators and related service providers to promote integration of mobility skills within the educational curriculum Maintain clear documentation of student progress and communicate updates with families and IEP teams Adapt lesson plans based on student progress, feedback, and relevant technological advances
