State Park programs provide safe and fun educational experiences for the whole family. Why does the job exist? The purpose of this position, which is assigned to Elephant Butte Lake State Park, is to provide effective lake, vessel, vehicle, facilities and heavy equipment maintenance and operations. Assist in providing boating safety classes to staff, visitors and surrounding community schools, military basis, and other agencies, operate various types of vessels, power tools, and heavy equipment. Clean, inspect and maintain courtesy docks, ramps, parking lots. vessels, fleet and boating program and park facilities to ensure safe operations for staff and visitor use. Maintain inland waterway marking buoy system in accordance to guidelines and standards. Maintain and map locations of all aids to navigation to include buoys, docks, ramps, etc. Complete daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reports, fuel logs, vessel and fleet logs, collect revenues from visitors, provide visitor and boating information, prepare quotes for boating needs. This position will also monitor park operations, assist with general functions of the park administration, fee enhancement, and fulfill managerial requirements when the Park Superintendents or Park Managers are unavailable. How does it get done? This position supports a wide range of lake operations and maintenance tasks and requires strong physical capability, including lifting, bending, standing, and operating boats, trailers, vehicles, and occasional heavy equipment. Key responsibilities include performing lake maintenance such as buoy work, dock and boat ramp upkeep, hazard marking, anchor placement, lake mapping, and providing boat tows. The position also conducts routine vehicle, vessel, and trailer maintenance, including scheduled inspections and reports, oil changes, bearing and tire work, electrical troubleshooting, cleaning, and minor repairs. Additional duties include facility upkeep¿such as maintaining restrooms, shops, storage areas, and the training center¿as well as supporting education and administrative functions, including boating education classes, the loaner life jacket program, obtaining quotes, assisting with fee collection points, and completing computer-based tasks. Minimum Qualification High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in parks, monuments, museums, interpretive/educational ranger, field archaeologist, and/or ruins preservationist at a historic site. Employment Requirements Weekend and holiday work required. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Working Conditions The working conditions for this position involve regular outdoor activity in a lake and park environment, often in varying weather conditions such as heat, wind, cold, and precipitation. The position requires frequent physical activity including lifting, bending, standing for extended periods, and operating boats, trailers, vehicles, and other equipment. Duties may involve working on or near the water, navigating uneven terrain, and handling tools, machinery, and maintenance materials.
