Job Description
The Financial Counselor in Patient Financial Services plays a key role in supporting patients with their financial responsibilities related to healthcare services. This position is responsible for coordinating self-pay billing, educating patients on available financial assistance options, and explaining payment expectations and non-payment processes. This role involves guiding patients through Community Care programs, extended payment plans, and other financial assistance resources, while providing clear, accurate, and compassionate support. The Financial Counselor works closely with patients to ensure understanding, promote access to assistance programs, and enhance the overall patient financial experience. Key Responsibilities Assist patients with questions regarding their accounts and billing statements Establish and maintain payment plans in accordance with hospital policies Educate patients about the Community Care Program; assist with applications and maintain required reporting Contact patients via phone and/or written correspondence regarding account balances, missed payments, payment arrangements, and financial assistance options Explain payment plan agreements and support patients in completing necessary documentation Provide backup support for cashiering functions as needed Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary coursework in a related field preferred Previous financial counseling experience in a healthcare setting preferred Preferred Skills & Attributes Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to remain calm and professional while addressing sensitive financial matters Compassionate, respectful approach when working with patients Ability to clearly communicate payment expectations Strong attention to detail and ability to follow up effectively on processes Understanding of and adherence to policies and procedures General knowledge of commercial insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid, including deductibles, coinsurance, and copays, is helpful but not required Interested candidates may complete an online application at www.richlandhospital.com or submit a resume to hr@richlandhospital.com.
