Job Summary:
The Marching Band Percussion Director is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the high school percussion program, including rehearsals, performances, instruction, and student development. This position provides high-quality training in percussion technique, musicianship, marching fundamentals, and ensemble performance while fostering teamwork, leadership, discipline, and academic success among student participants. The Director collaborates closely with the Band Director, music department staff, booster organizations, and community stakeholders to coordinate program operations, budgeting, travel, equipment, and performances. The ideal candidate will promote a positive, inclusive, and professional program culture that reflects excellence in both musical achievement and student growth. Essential Functions Plan, supervise, coordinate, and direct all rehearsals, performances, and related activities for students participating in the high school marching percussion program beyond the contractual school day; audition and select students according to established district guidelines; and lead all rehearsals and public performances in a student-centered, artistic, disciplined, and professional manner. Provide high-quality instruction with rigorous expectations in percussion performance techniques, musicianship, marching fundamentals, movement, staging, ensemble cohesion, deportment, and all other elements necessary to develop and sustain a successful percussion program. Design, coordinate, and oversee all aspects of the percussion season in alignment with district policies and program goals, including selecting and developing age-appropriate musical and visual concepts, fostering student leadership and personal growth, and monitoring the academic eligibility and well-being of all participants. Promote and strengthen positive school and community relations through performances, public appearances, outreach activities, and representation of the school district in a professional and respectful manner. Communicate clearly, consistently, and professionally with students, parents/guardians, staff, administrators, booster organizations, and community stakeholders regarding schedules, expectations, policies, performances, and program needs. Instruct students in the safe use, care, maintenance, inventory, transportation, and storage of all percussion instruments, equipment, electronics, props, uniforms, and related materials. Supervise, collaborate with, and coordinate the work of all percussion instructional staff, arrangers, technicians, choreographers, and support personnel involved in rehearsals, performances, and productions. Collaborate with the Band Director and Supervisor of Music Education to develop and manage extracurricular budgets related to participation fees, travel, transportation, equipment, instruments, uniforms, supplies, and other resources necessary to support a high-quality percussion program. Coordinate all operational and logistical aspects of the percussion program, including rehearsal and performance scheduling, student supervision, competition participation, equipment transportation, prop and field setup, and event preparation. Work cooperatively with the band booster organization and supervise adult volunteers and support personnel assisting with equipment loading, transportation, field setup, prop construction, fundraising, rehearsal operations, and performances. Collect, organize, and submit participation fees, forms, and related program documentation by established district deadlines and maintain accurate records associated with student participation and program activities.
Qualifications:
Successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination. Successful completion of required background clearances, including: Pennsylvania State Criminal History Clearance Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance Federal Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) Clearance (Fingerprinting) Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may deem appropriate and acceptable.
