Proctor High School is seeking a passionate and organized One-Act Play Director to lead and oversee all aspects of the school's participation in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) One-Act Play competition, including preparation and advancement through sub-region, region, and state levels. The director will inspire students through artistic expression, develop performance and technical theater skills, and ensure a supportive, inclusive, and educational experience for all participants.
Key Responsibilities:
Select an appropriate MSHSL-approved one-act play that meets contest rules and time requirements. Organize and lead auditions, casting, rehearsals, and performances according to a pre-established production calendar. Collaborate with school staff, students, and families to promote the program and encourage student participation. Ensure the production aligns with school district values and MSHSL guidelines regarding content, safety, and inclusivity. Supervise and support student performers and crew members in areas such as acting, stagecraft, lighting, sound, makeup, and costuming. Coordinate with the Activities Director the logistics for competition entries, including registration, transportation, schedules, and required documentation. Work collaboratively with other fine arts staff and the Activities Office. Attend all MSHSL sub-region, region, and state contests as required; manage all aspects of student behavior and safety during travel and competition. Communicate regularly with students, families, and administration regarding expectations, schedules, and performance updates. Manage program budget and resources effectively, including script royalties, set materials, and technical needs. Foster an inclusive, positive, and respectful environment for all students, consistent with the district's mission to "educate, engage, and inspire" and its vision of "empowering all learners to achieve in a respectful, innovative, and inclusive environment."
Qualifications:
Required:
Experience directing theater productions at the high school, collegiate, and/or community level. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends. Knowledge of or willingness to learn MSHSL One-Act Play rules and procedures.
Preferred:
Experience working with high school students in an educational or extracurricular setting. Experience with technical theater elements, including lighting, sound, and set design. Familiarity with student competition rules, performance adjudication, and school district policies.
