Overview and position summary: St. Andrew's Lutheran Church is seeking a Children's Choir Director to oversee and direct the Grades K-2 Children's Choir - The Choristers. Additionally, this position will be expected to prepare and lead age appropriate music experiences during Sunday School, VBS, and Summer Adventure Camp. This is a part-time position that is expected to work 8-10 hours per week during the program year, with most of the summer off except for a couple of weeks which will require more hours for VBS and Summer Adventure Camp. St. Andrew's is a vibrant, growing congregation of roughly 9,000 members located in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, a suburban community northeast of St. Paul. Our church is guided by its mission statement to "Proclaim Jesus Christ, Live in Christ, Serve." Our congregation celebrates active worship life, community outreach, and a robust children, youth, and family ministry program. Approximately 2,400 people attend worship services each week online and in person.
Responsibilities:
Develop Choristers Choir skills in fundamentals of music reading, principles of rhythm, intonation, vocal production, breath, control, diction, phrasing, and rehearsal and worship etiquette. Rehearse choir on a weekly basis for one hour on Wednesday evenings during the program year. Supervise choir members during rehearsal, ensuring a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all participants. The Choristers Choir, under the direction of the director, is responsible for singing for Sunday Worship 1-2 times per month. Other required performances include; Christmas Festival, Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday; Other dates as assigned. Prepare and purchase appropriate music and materials for for worship services and for the development of the choir's skills. Follow a prescribed budget and maintain an organized music library. Recruit new members for the choir. Develop and maintain a developmentally appropriate music experience for St. Andrew's Sunday School, including planning and preparing music to support educational plans from the CYF team. Maintain classroom safety and manage behavior issues with assistance from CYF staff and/or Sunday School volunteers. Communicate and collaborate with CYF Director to ensure the Sunday School music program is in alignment with their goals. Provide a music component to CYF programming, including VBS and Summer Adventure Camp, as assigned and in collaboration with the CYF team.
Minimum Qualifications:
Alignment with the mission, vision, and values of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church. At least 5 years of experience conducting musical groups, preferably with young children. Ability to work with and relate to the choir members and Sunday Schoolers, their particular vocal characteristics and personality needs. Strong vocal abilities with the ability to demonstrate and role model proper vocal techniques. Piano skills are required for rehearsal purposes (An accompanist is provided for all performances). Knowledge of the Christian faith and Lutheran theology. Ability to present information in an engaging, effective, and age-appropriate way. Ability to professionally communicate and interact with staff, co-workers, students, congregation members, visitors, vendors, and other internal and external contacts.
Work Schedule:
Part-time, approximately 8-10 hours per week late August through May. Summers are off and unpaid, with the exception of CYF Summer programming as assigned (i.e. VBS, Summer Adventure Camp). Wednesday evening and Sunday morning availability is required. More hours are required during the Christmas Festival and other events as needed. Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday availability is required.
