Job Description
The High School Band Director is responsible for the planning, implementation, and oversight of a comprehensive instrumental music program at the high school level. This position provides instruction to students in multiple band ensembles and ensures alignment with district curriculum, state standards, and the overall goals of the Fine Arts program. The Band Director manages all aspects of the band program, including performances, rehearsals, scheduling, equipment, and student development. The role requires ongoing collaboration with colleagues, administrators, and feeder programs to support continuity and growth. In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Band Director supports extracurricular activities related to band, including marching band and pep band, and contributes to the broader school community through communication, coordination, and participation in district initiatives. Responsibilities Instructional Leadership & Program Direction Direct all high school band ensembles, including concert band(s), marching band, and pep band Plan and deliver a comprehensive, sequential curriculum aligned with district and state standards Prepare ensembles for concerts, performances, and adjudicated events Differentiate instruction to support students of varying skill levels and abilities Establish a positive, structured rehearsal environment focused on growth, accountability, and belonging Program Development & Collaboration Collaborate with middle school band directors to ensure vertical alignment and program continuity Support and contribute to the broader Fine Arts program through interdisciplinary collaboration Work with the Fine Arts Specialist on program development, budgeting, and long-term planning Support recruitment and retention efforts to grow and sustain the band program Operations & Communication Communicate effectively with students, families, staff, and administration Maintain accurate records, inventory, and care of instruments, equipment, and music library Coordinate scheduling, travel, and logistics for performances and competitions Uphold high expectations for student conduct, musicianship, and performance excellence Extracurricular & Community Engagement Lead and organize marching band season, including rehearsals, performances, and logistics Direct and/or support pep band at school and community events Engage in community outreach and represent the band program positively Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and district initiatives Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Fine Arts Specialist Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field Valid Ohio teaching license in Music (Instrumental preferred) Demonstrated success teaching and directing secondary band ensembles Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills Commitment to student-centered instruction and inclusive practices Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners Preferred Master's degree in Music Education or related field Experience with marching band design, coordination, and instruction Experience in program development and student recruitment Familiarity with budgeting, inventory management, and resource planning Demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines within a comprehensive Fine Arts program Physical Demands Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout classrooms, rehearsal spaces, and performance venues for extended periods Ability to conduct ensembles for prolonged durations Ability to lift, carry, and move musical instruments and equipment (up to 25-50 pounds) Ability to travel to performances, competitions, and events, including evenings and weekends Ability to perform tasks requiring fine motor skills, hearing acuity, and visual focus Working Conditions Work is performed in a variety of settings including classrooms, auditoriums, rehearsal spaces, outdoor fields, and community venues Schedule includes regular school hours as well as evenings, weekends, and extended hours during marching band season and performance events Moderate noise levels with frequent exposure to loud music environments Frequent interaction with students, staff, families, and community members Fast-paced environment requiring strong organizational and time-management skills EEO Disclaimer Findlay City Schools is an Equal Opportunity Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), disability, age, religion, military status, ancestry, or genetic information (collectively, "Protected Classes").
