Primary Purpose:
Assist in directing and managing the overall band program for the campus and district. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and district requirements. Be active in the planning and instruction of band activities in accordance with campus and district expectations. Be active in the planning and preparation to provide students the opportunity to achieve district, region, state, and national recognition.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university Valid Texas teaching certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program Ability to manage budget and personnel Knowledge of state, TMEA, and UIL policies governing band activities Ability to implement policy and procedures Ability to interpret data Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
Experience:
Three years teaching and band directing experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Direct junior high school instrumental performers, including beginning classes, all large band performance ensembles, soloists, and small ensembles. 2. Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student's eligibility to participate in band. 3. Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, football games, pep rallies, parades, UIL, and TMEA activities. 4. Arrange transportation for all events taking place off campus. 5. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL rules, TMEA rules, and local school board policy in the band area. 6. Support band booster club activities, if applicable. 7. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and to ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs. 8. Recommend policies to improve program. 9. Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely. 10. Attend all professional and staff meetings as requested 11. Assist in compiling budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs. 12. Assist in coordinating fundraising activities and management of funds. 13. Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within department. 14. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment. 15. Assist in developing and implementing plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required. 16. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences. 17. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations including, but not limited to, the established Northwest ISD curriculum for subject area. 18. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. 19. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing. 20. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students. 21. Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook, and band handbook. 22. Accompany and supervise students on all trips. 23. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. 24. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers. 25. Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members. 26. Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, evaluation, and retention of band members. 27. Work to provide campus, District, and community awareness of band activities and performances. 28. Provide supervisory leadership and management to all component groups within band program. 29. Provide additional help, as available, to "cluster" high school band program(s), when requested. Actively participate in District music events. 30. Support implementation of Campus Improvement Plan. 31. Participate actively in district and TMEA professional development.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Will be defined by the Band Director, which may include, but are not limited to:
  • Individual section teaching responsibilities
  • Performance ensemble rehearsals/performances
  • Recruiting and supervising campus private lessons program instructors
  • Monitor/supervise campus private lesson program.
  • Monitor/advise booster organization activities
Working Conditions:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather. Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, pulling, pushing, walking, and overhead reaching.
