Athletic Bands Leadership:

Direct, administer, recruit for, and oversee all aspects of the Sound of Southern Utah Marching Band and Sound Machine Basketball Band, including rehearsals, performances, travel, student leadership development, and related coursework. (This position includes up to 6 Institutional Credit Hours [ICH] of load reassignment to lead, recruit, manage, and direct the SUU band programs.)

Area Coordinator & Applied Instruction:

Teach applied trumpet lessons and trumpet-related courses for music majors and non-majors, as well as other courses consistent with the candidate's expertise and departmental needs.

Serve as Brass area coordinator including oversight of brass instrument inventories and assisting the Department Chair in identifying and supervising adjunct brass faculty as needed.

Recruitment & Outreach:

Develop and execute strategic recruitment initiatives locally, regionally, and nationally to actively grow the athletic band and brass programs. Foster positive relationships with school music educators and community partners through active engagement in local, state, regional, and national professional organizations.

Cross-Departmental Collaboration:

Partner closely with both the Athletic and Music Departments to cultivate vibrant campus traditions through high-energy, excellent band performances.

Student Mentorship:

Advise and mentor undergraduate students in their academic, musical, and professional development.

Scholarship:

Maintain an active agenda of scholarly, creative, and/or professional activity consistent with expectations for a tenure-track appointment.

Service:

Participate in departmental, college, university, and professional service activities, including committee assignments. Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications Terminal Degree:

Doctorate degree in music (e.g., Conducting, Brass Performance, or a related field). Minimum of two (2) years of college or university teaching experience. Demonstrated excellence in trumpet performance and teaching. Experience directing marching bands, athletic bands, concert bands, or related ensembles. Proven expertise in brass/trumpet performance with a record of artistic or scholarly achievement. Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to inspire student excellence in musical performance. Preferred Qualifications Extensive experience in recruiting and retaining students in the areas of marching band, concert band, and trumpet instruction Record of effective teaching at the secondary or collegiate level. Experience designing and implementing marching band shows, including drill design, music selection, production planning, and staff coordination. Experience managing budgets, equipment inventories, travel logistics, and other administrative aspects of large ensemble programs. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with athletics, university administration, alumni, and community stakeholders. Ability to teach additional areas of music (e.g., music history, music appreciation, or general education courses). Experience teaching in online/hybrid environments and utilizing Learning Management Systems (LMS). A record of effectively mentoring and supporting students from diverse backgrounds and musical training. This position is contingent on funding.
