Instrumental Music Department Chair (The Governor's School for the Arts) Norfolk Public School District - 3.0 Norfolk, VA Job Details Full-time 8 hours ago Qualifications Team leadership Academic institution experience Bachelor's degree Classroom Teaching Parent-teacher conferences (communication methods) Specialization in creative arts instruction Teaching instrumental performance Full Job Description Full-Time and Permanent; 7.5 Hours/Day; 210 Days/Year; 11 Months/Year Definition The position is responsible for assisting the Executive Director in the coordination, supervision, and management of the Instrumental Music Department. This position includes specialized teaching, administrative, artistic, and programmatic work. The Chair is responsible for planning and teaching instrumental music and related classes; assessing students; coordinating applied instruction, chamber music, ensembles, juries, recitals, master classes, auditions, and performances; and conferring with families, students, faculty, colleagues, and community partners. The Chair is responsible for leading the department in setting high expectations for students and helping students meet those expectations through clear communication of goals, scaffolded instruction, defined levels of achievement, and preparation for post-secondary music study and professional pathways. Examples of Duties Assist the executive director in the developing and maintaining of a rigorous instrumental music program. Assist the executive director in the administration of the department; enforce school policies and procedures. Deliver classroom instruction and assess student work. Secure, onboard, monitor, and evaluate adjunct faculty; maintain and submit faculty time sheets. Coordinate weekly private lessons and support alignment between applied instruction, student goals, juries, auditions, recitals, and college/conservatory preparation. Maintain a good working relationship with local arts organizations and higher education partners. Plan, secure and schedule guest artists for the department. Develop the instructional master class schedule for the department. Oversee students' attendance, academic progress and juried evaluations. Support students in repertoire selection, audition preparation, pre-screening recordings, competitions, senior recitals, and post-secondary music pathways. Recruit, audition and selection of potential students for the program. Requisition and maintenance of supplies, instruments, sheet music, technology, and equipment; conduct inventories, maintain records and check on receipts for such materials. Collaborate for interdisciplinary programming. Work with the executive director with compiling and managing the department's annual operational budget. Assist in coordinating transportation, venue needs, and logistics for performances. Perform other school support services. Planning, coordination, and supervision of multiple concerts, events, and recitals. Help conduct safety inspections and safety drill practice activities within the department. Communicate with students, families, faculty, and partner districts. Schedule and conduct parent-teacher conferences. Additional duties as assigned by the executive director. Minimum Requirements Bachelor's Degree. Experience as a professional musician and teaching instrumental music. Tuberculin Skin Test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis. In-depth knowledge of instrumental music including professional musicianship, music theory, as well as understanding of small ensembles and performance etiquette. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Physical Effort Above-average amount of walking, climbing, bending, standing, stooping, and lifting in classrooms, rehearsal rooms, instrument storage areas, concert venues, theaters, and other performance settings. Work may require moving chairs, music stands, risers, instruments, percussion equipment, audio/technology equipment, and other materials required for rehearsals, performances, auditions, and departmental events. Hazards Work involves exposure to normal everyday hazards. Chair is responsible for outlining, promoting, and monitoring safe practices in relation to the use, movement, storage, and transport of instruments, music stands, chairs, risers, cables, audio/technology equipment, and other materials used in instructional and performance settings. Unusual Demands Work is required in educational, rehearsal, concert, and professional performance settings. Individual may be required to work outside of the regular instructional day for rehearsals, concerts, recitals, juries, auditions, recruitment events, parent conferences, and other departmental activities. Individual may be required to lift, move, and transport instruments, stands, chairs, risers, equipment, and other materials required for successful performances and events
