Position Overview:

The Music Accompanist provides musical support for worship services, rehearsals, and special events at UMC Vista. This position plays a vital role in enhancing the spiritual and musical life of the church by accompanying choirs, praise bands, soloists, and congregational singing during worship and other church functions. This is a part-time position that requires musical excellence, flexibility, and a heart for ministry through music. The Music Accompanist will work closely with the Director of Music Ministries, clergy, and volunteers to prepare and present inspiring and meaningful worship experiences.

Responsibilities:

Worship and Rehearsals:

Provide piano accompaniment for Sunday morning worship services. Accompany the Chancel Choir during Thursday evening rehearsals. Lead morning Vespers (as needed). Fill in for Director of Music (as needed). Accompany additional vocalists or instrumentalists as needed for worship and special music. Prepare and perform music for special liturgical services such as Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, Easter, and other church holidays and events.

Musical Preparation:

Practice and prepare music selections in advance of scheduled services and rehearsals. Collaborate with the Director of Music Ministries to select appropriate and inspiring musical arrangements for worship. Provide musical support during funerals, weddings, or other church events as requested and scheduled.

Teamwork and Communication:

Communicate effectively and consistently with music staff and clergy about scheduling, song selection, and worship themes. Maintain a spirit of cooperation, adaptability, and professionalism in rehearsals and worship settings. Support the overall mission of the church through excellence in music and service.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated proficiency in piano performance; ability to read and interpret choral and instrumental scores. Experience accompanying vocal ensembles and congregational singing. Strong sight-reading skills and familiarity with church music (traditional and contemporary). Availability for Thursday evening rehearsals, Sunday morning services, Wednesday morning Vespers (as needed), and major church holidays. Ability to work collaboratively with choir directors, clergy, and paid and volunteer musicians. A commitment to the values and mission of the United Methodist Church. Conducting and organ skills (or an interest in learning) desired but not required.

Flexible and responsive to feedback and changing needs during live services. Audition will include both a prepared and sightread choral anthem.
