Job Description

Church Organist/Pianist Status - Part-time FLSA - Non-exempt Job Summary The Church Organist/Pianist is responsible for playing at regular Sunday worship service(s), special services, and accompanying the Sanctuary choir and soloists during rehearsals and worship. Essential Functions
  • Play hymns on for Sunday worship service(s)
  • Prepare liturgically appropriate Prelude and Postlude on piano or organ weekly, and communion music once a month.
  • Accompany Sanctuary Choir on piano or organ, as needed, at rehearsals and for Sunday worship. Also play for the Saturday morning rehearsals before Christmas Cantata and Holy Week, as well as Good Friday and Christmas Eve services.
  • Accompany Joyful Noise Children's Choir once a month (October - April) in worship and play at rehearsals.
  • Accompany instrumental and vocal soloists for rehearsals and Sunday worship weekly in the summer.
  • Support programs that occasionally happen in the life of the church that require music, such as Ash Wednesday, Blue Christmas, Annual Church Conference, etc.
  • Communicate with Director of Worship Arts and/or Choir Director weekly
  • If unavailable to play, work with Director of Worship Arts and/or Choir Director to find a substitute. Other Responsibilities
  • Opportunities to play keyboard occasionally with Praise Team contemporary band, if interested.
  • Opportunities to play for Weddings and Funerals, if available. Minimum Qualifications
  • Able to demonstrate competency on organ and piano in a range of musical styles
  • Previous experience as a church musician preferred, but not required,
  • Has experience playing and choosing appropriate music for worship services, preferred but not required.
  • Has strong sight-reading skills, is comfortable working with a director, and collaborating with a choir and vocal/instrumental soloists. Physical Requirements
  • Able to go up and down staircases to access the entire building.
  • Able to move easily between the organ and piano during worship and rehearsals
  • Has sufficient sight and hearing to manage face to face communication on the job and see the music.
Compensation Hourly compensation to start at $23-$25/hour

Provides spiritually filled rehearsals, helping choir(s) understand the meaning of what they are singing or playing by sharing knowledge of composers, the composer's intent, and connection with the scriptures and service themes.
