Job Title:
Pipe Layer / Underground Utility Laborer Job Description This role focuses on installing underground sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water main services while ensuring accurate pipe bedding and alignment. You will work outdoors on civil and construction projects, handling tools, equipment, and materials to support safe and efficient trenching and pipe installation operations. Responsibilities Load and unload tools, equipment, and materials at the job site on a daily basis. Hand dig and probe to locate existing underground utilities safely and accurately. Assemble and place pipe, fittings, structures, mechanical restraints, thrust blocks, and related components for underground utility systems. Understand and maintain proper subgrade and pipe bedding elevations to ensure correct installation. Work with rotary lasers, pipe lasers, and other measuring instruments to verify line and grade and ensure accuracy of work. Comprehend, acknowledge, and follow all OSHA requirements and trench safety procedures as outlined in the company trench safety manual. Rig trench boxes, street plates, and related materials safely to support trenching operations. Operate hand tools and power tools as required to complete pipe installation tasks. Grout pipe at structures and pour catch basin bottoms as needed. Use and care for tools and equipment properly, particularly those associated with storm, water, and sanitary sewer installations. Assist in cleaning and greasing tools, equipment, and work areas to maintain a safe and orderly job site. Perform other duties as assigned to support the crew and project completion. Essential Skills Minimum of 3+ years of pipe laying experience, specifically with sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and water main services. Proficiency in pipe laying within civil and construction environments, including trench work. Ability to read and interpret blueprints related to underground utilities and site layouts. Experience working with trenching operations and understanding of trench safety practices. Skilled in the use of hand tools and power tools commonly used in pipe installation and general labor tasks. Ability to use rotary lasers, pipe lasers, and other instruments to maintain accurate line and grade. Capability to rig trench boxes, street plates, and related materials safely. Knowledge of the proper care, cleaning, and basic maintenance of tools and equipment. Ability to work full-time hours Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with occasional Saturdays as needed. Physical ability to perform outdoor, labor-intensive work including lifting, digging, bending, and working in varying weather conditions. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in industrial or general labor environments. Experience working with backhoes or exposure to heavy equipment operations in a construction setting. Familiarity with storm, water, and sanitary sewer system components and installation methods. Comfort working from construction blueprints and site plans to support layout and installation. Ability to be hired on a permanent basis after a successful initial period. Why Work Here? Work hours are typically Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with occasional Saturday work communicated in advance by midweek. The role involves working in varying weather conditions, on uneven terrain, and around heavy equipment such as backhoes and other construction machinery. You will regularly use hand tools, power tools, rotary lasers, pipe lasers, and rigging equipment, while following OSHA and trench safety standards to maintain a safe job site. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Johnstown, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $27.00/hr.
