Job Description About the Role With over 84,000 plants representing about 27,000 taxa, The Huntington is home to one of the largest and most diverse collections of living plants in the world. Our biodiverse living collections provide an opportunity to interpret the wide variety of plant life for educational, conservation, research, and display purposes. The Huntington is seeking a part-time, limited term technician to work with botanical records for up to 20 hours per week. This position will report to the Associate Director of Botanical Collections, Conservation and Research, performing duties that support staff in maintaining the plant records. The expected start date will be in June 2026. This is a limited-term and part-time position, budgeted for four months to cover a leave of absence. Essential Duties Maintain plant records in plant records database (BG Base and ArcGIS Online & ArcGIS Pro), including plant accessions, names, locations, and sources. Update files on regular basis to accurately reflect the composition of the living collections. Accession new plant material in accordance with accessioning protocols Assist with producing labels and signage for the living collections, including embossed stainless steel accession tags. Assist with inventorying and/or mapping the living collections May be asked to perform duties in other areas of the Huntington Botanical Gardens as needed Other duties as assigned Candidate Experience and Qualifications Knowledge, skills, and abilities: An understanding of standard plant collections curatorial practices and procedures Familiar with plant collections management software Familiar with botanical nomenclature standards Must be able to learn programs quickly and be able to focus on tasks for long periods of time Must be detail oriented Must be in good physical condition to stoop, bend, walk long distances, and lift moderate loads Familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word preferred Must be able to work independently without constant supervision or be able to work in teams with volunteers or employees
Experience:
A bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, or a related field Some botanical knowledge required Experience with using a botanical records database Working Conditions Working indoors on a computer for most of the day.
