Police Officer Orange Beach, City of (AL) AL Posted Date 5/14/2026 Description
JOB SUMMARY
Under general direction the officer patrols designated sections of the City on foot or in automobiles and responds to complaints. Serves warrants and subpoenas and testifies in court. Conducts preliminary investigations and makes arrests. Provide traffic control and assistance and perform other police-related duties when required. Respond to medical emergencies as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Patrol Duties Enforces all city, state and federal laws. Responds to complaints of all types, robberies, burglaries, domestic fights, fires, etc., within the City. Patrols a designated section of the City on foot or in automobile; alternates route and backtracks frequently in order to be at locations least expected. Observes activities and looks for any situation that does not appear normal for the area, time of day, weather conditions, etc. Conducts preliminary investigations of felonies and misdemeanors. Investigates and secures the crime scene; interviews victims, complainants, witnesses; collects evidence; and prepares all necessary reports. Conducts follow up investigations as needed. Completes incident/offense reports, accident reports, daily log sheets and other reports as required by the department. Assists fire department, EMS, ambulance service, state troopers and other law enforcement agencies on calls within the City. Escorts local merchants to the bank when requested. Makes security checks on residential and commercial properties within the City. Responds to medical emergencies as needed. Operates radio in accordance with FCC and departmental regulations and procedures Traffic Control Duties Directs traffic at intersections, accident scenes, fire scenes, crime scenes, school crossings, and special events. Provides escorts for funerals, parades, ambulances, and oversized loads. Assists stranded motorists. Operates moving and stationary radar providing enforcement action as needed. Administers DMT to motorists when deemed necessary, upon certification. Reports missing or malfunction traffic control devices, streetlights and signs. Civil and Criminal Process Duties Serves and executes warrants. Serves subpoenas. Makes arrests. Testifies in court. Assists the district attorney with a case when necessary. Transports prisoners to county jail as needed. Maintains city jail security as needed. Equipment Maintenance Duties Checks all fluid (gas, oil, water, etc.) levels of the car. Checks the outside of the car which includes the tires, tire pressure, and all lights. Checks the interior of the car, back seat, radios, radar, and the shotgun rack. Maintains pistol and shotgun in good clean working order, ensures enough ammunition is on hand. Reports any equipment that is faulty or shows signs of excessive wear. Miscellaneous Duties Keeps uniform and badges clean and neat. Maintains good public relations with citizens; works with merchants and citizens in order to prevent crime. Attends various training classes on police-related subjects. Reads journals and other materials to stay abreast of new trends, tactics, developments and laws. Performs animal control duties when necessary. All positions at the City of Orange Beach have the job responsibilities below: Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner. Becomes thoroughly familiar with all pertinent state and national policies and comply with said policies. Complies with City wide and departmental policies, as well as state and federal laws. Ensures the positive promotion of the City. Is prompt and punctual in reporting for work, meetings, etc. Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Verbal skills to communicate factual information to subordinates, co-workers, supervisors, general public, and court personnel. De-escalation skills. Writing skills to clearly and neatly complete routine forms and reports. Reading skills to read and understand professional publications, court records, legal briefs and other complex materials. Skills in basic math and geometry to compute accident data and make scale drawings. Listening skills to receive dispatched calls, take complaints and interview witnesses. Driving skills to properly and safely operate a vehicle under adverse conditions. Skill to operate vehicle and department radios. Knowledge of the City, its buildings and road system. Knowledge of City and state law and court procedures. Knowledge of first aid. Knowledge of disaster and emergency procedures. Knowledge of modern approved principles, practices and procedures of law enforcement. Knowledge of City and department rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Knowledge and skills in the maintenance and use of different types of weapons. Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action. Ability to work independently without close supervision. Knowledge of radio codes and terminology. Ability to remember names, faces, and details of incidents. Ability to successfully pass a physical ability test and a standardized written test before advancing to the interview phase of the selection process.
QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age and a U.S. citizen. Certification by Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission(A.P.O.S.T.C.) for law enforcement officers or the ability to be certified within six (6) months of appointment. Possess a valid Driver's License. Willing to work overtime, non-standard hours, weekends and holidays. Willing to travel to attend schools, transport prisoners, and appear in court. Willing to comply with following standards: clean, neat uniform with appropriate weapon or other gear.
