PM Position Objectives:
We are recruiting locally and looking for enthusiastic candidates who have a passion for law enforcement to send to a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy in July/August 2026! Police Officer Recruit pay is $31.52/hr. while attending the academy. Upon successful completion of the P.O.S.T. Academy and written P.O.S.T. test, pay and position will be adjusted to the beginning step of Police Officer at $77,043. While attending the P.O.S.T. Academy the schedule will be set by the academy to include any additional training and homework that may be required outside of classroom hours. Persons hired into the Police Officer Recruit Position will be enrolled in a state certified Peace Officer and Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) academy. This class consists of learning the concepts and laws regarding responsible police work in a variety of Police Department activities including police patrol, follow-up investigation, crime prevention, court security, traffic safety, community relations, and non-criminal police services, C.R.S., defensive driving, physical fitness, and basic firearms. Trainee incumbents will be required to attend and successfully pass a state certified Peace Officer and Standards Training (P.O.S.T.) academy. Provide holistic services to the public by seeking ways to integrate programs or services provided by other departments, divisions and agencies. The incumbent works in partnership with other employees, departments/divisions, agencies and the public in delivering effective and innovative services.
Minimum Requirements:
The Police Officer Recruit candidate must meet the following minimum qualifications of a
Police Officer:
High school graduation or equivalent. Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older. A Colorado P.O.S.T. certification as a Level 1 Peace Officer. A valid Colorado Driver License and good driving record or the ability to obtain upon hire is required; must have had a Driver License for at least two (2) years. Associate degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice or related field is preferred. The ability to type 25 words per minute accurately is required. Must have the ability to pass all phases of the selection process for Police Officer. The ability to successfully complete a background check including but not limited to: criminal history search, drug screen, motor vehicle record (MVR) check, CVSA, psychological and physical examination is required. No felony convictions.
Benefits:
The City of Federal Heights provides the following benefits to employees: 11 holidays, vacation accruals for full-time employees are based on years of service from 6.67-13.33 hours per month. Full-time firefighters accrue vacation based on years of service from 12-18 hours per month. Full-time employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 8 hours per month of service to a maximum of 960 hours. Part-time employees accrue sick leave at a rate of 1 hour per 30 hours worked. Regular full-time employees, except for police officers and firefighters are required to participate in the City's 401(a) retirement plan. A voluntary 457 plan is also available to all regular employees. Police Officers and firefighters participate in a State-approved retirement plan. The City of Federal Heights offers both short-term disability and long-term disability to its regular and part-time employees. Police officers and firefighters are eligible for long-term disability benefits in accordance with the terms and conditions set forth by the State of Colorado's Fire and Police Pension Association (FPPA). The City of Federal Heights offers life insurance benefits to all full- and part-time employees. Part-time employees must work a minimum of 30 hours per week to be eligible for life insurance benefits. The City also offers a voluntary life insurance plan for employees to purchase additional life insurance. Regular and part-time employees are eligible for City of Federal Heights benefits the first of the month after their hire date. Part-time employees must work at least 30 hours per week to be eligible for pro-rated benefits. Medical benefits are offered through Colorado Employers Benefit Trust (CEBT), which is self-funded multiple employer trust that currently provides employee benefits for over 300 public entities, school districts, and colleges. The City of Federal Heights offers the choice of three medical plans through CEBT. Employees can choose from an EPO, PPO, or Kaiser HMO plan. Vision insurance is provided through VSP, and dental benefits are offered through Delta Dental.
