Job Description

Pre/Post Operative Registered Nurse Franciscan Orthopedic Surgery Center Main Functions:
Responsible for organizing, directing and providing direct patient care. Participates in planning work of assigned areas and coordinates activities with other patient-care areas. Ensures that patient needs are met. Works closely with team leader and administrator in coordinating patient-care service functions.
Essential Responsibilities:
Leadership :
Provide unit level leadership and acts as resource for the Surgery Center, including accrediting organizations, corporate compliance, marketing efforts, etc. Consider cost containment by using supplies economically and in effective patient care management.
Center Operations :
Organize time, equipment, supplies, and personnel to provide effective and efficient case management. Organize nursing activities efficiently and effectively. Assist with supply, drug, and equipment inventories to maintain stock level and availability. Document patient care records and other forms accurately following policies and procedures. Provide for comfort in the physical environment by monitoring designated parameters. Use equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care. Confirm the proper technique and procedures are used according to accepted standards and practices.
Team :
Participate as a team member in support of the total peri- operative process.
Communications :
Accurately advise patients' status to others responsible for the patient's care. Provide continuity of patient care by communicating with other personnel and documenting records accordingly. Accurately comprehend and interpret verbal orders/directions. Review patient's medical record/needs in order to plan care with other health care team members.
Compliance :
Follow HIPAA and privacy laws in maintaining patient's privacy and dignity. Assist with the proper and safe positioning of the patient and prepares operative site as directed by established procedures.
Pre/Post Operations :
Follows facility policy and assists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient upon admission. Performs thorough admission assessment of patient. Develops a plan of care for the patient based on assessment data and implements admission care. Documents admission care according to policy and procedures. Completes admission checklist when turning care of patient over to operating room personnel. Develops a plan of care for the patient based on the assessment data. Discharges patient when all criteria is met. Maintains order and cleanliness of admission and post-operative areas.
Procedures :
May provide total pre/intra/post care of all "pain" procedures. May provide sedation for patients during colonoscopy procedures. May circulate colonoscopy procedures as needed. May provide a pre-admission clinic area for patient appointments for pre-op assessments.
Patient Care :
Greets patient and provides comfort and reassurance to the patient and supports the patient's rights to privacy, dignity and confidentiality. Informs patient about routine care and procedures related to the peri-operative experience. Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate post-operative/post-anesthesia period. Assesses and documents the patient's physical and emotional status upon arrival in the recovery room. Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered. Monitors patients and informs surgeon or anesthetist of observed complications. Performs thorough post-operative patient assessment prior to discharge of the patient. Reviews post-operative instructions and prescriptions from the surgeon with patient and significant other and documents in the patient's medical record. Informs patient and family about appropriate care and procedure to follow upon returning home. Determines that patient and significant other understand conditions that require immediate care/method to obtain immediate care. Provides comfort and reassurance to the patient and promotes privacy and dignity.
Requirements :
High school graduate or GED certificate recipient Graduate of accredited school of nursing RN with active license in appropriate state CPR certification

American English Preferred :
PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) experience ASC (Ambulatory Surgery Center) experience Computer literacy
