Job Description

Under the direct supervision of licensed nursing personnel, carries out quality patient care from ages newborn to geriatric according to hospital policies and procedures. Functioning within the limitation of job scope, assuring patient comfort. Assures patient/family needs are met. Demonstrates knowledge of patient/staff safety measures. Provides for open communication within the unit, with patients, families, physician, and other units. Core Responsibilities Participates in nursing reports by receiving and contributing to status reports of patients. Assists staff nurse with physical care of patients Assists staff nurses with patient monitoring and records observations accurately. Maintains skill level required to care for routine patients. Recognizes and appropriately reports changes in patient condition to the responsible nurse. Assures that Patient/Family needs are met. Makes rounds of the patient rooms and documents accordingly Assists with or transports patients as necessary. Keeps area adequately stocked with supplies. Recognizes and responds to priorities in patient care. Understands and follows proper lines of communication in reporting and/or problem solving. Additional Responsibilities Follows hospital policy and procedures. Participates in orientating new employees in the nursing areas as assigned by the Director of Nursing. Participates in research and testing of new equipment as directed. Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service education. Practices economy in the use of supplies, equipment, and time. Demonstrates flexibility in adjusting to variable workloads and job duties. Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge and Skills Strong communication skills and ability to explain medical issues in both layman's and medical terms. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations including medical emergencies and communicating with patients and their families. Working Environment Well-lit, ventilated, temperature-controlled environment. Possible hazards include a busy and stressful environment, long hours, and exposure to bio-hazardous waste, body fluids, chemicals, electrical devices, toxic waste, needles, and moving machinery. Physical Demands Reaching, bending lifting more than 25lbs., grasping, fine motor skills, pushing and pulling. Standing and walking for extended periods of time. Experience One year experience preferred. Education Completion of a state certified training program. CNA required or eligible within 60 days or FT student enrolled in RN or LPN Transcripts must be on file.
