Job Title:
Production Manager •
NOTE:
THIS ROLE REQUIRES PRIOR EXPERIENCE IN A SHEET METAL/MACHINING SHOP. PLEASE DO NOT APPLY IF YOU DO NOT HAVE RELEVANT EXPERIENCE.
About the Role The Production Manager is a key leadership role in our sheet metal and machining job shop. This position is responsible for managing all pre-production activities — from order intake and engineering review through job planning, programming, and release to the production floor. The role ensures jobs are accurately estimated, properly routed, and scheduled for efficient execution. The Pre-Production Manager bridges sales, engineering, and production teams to drive on-time delivery, optimize productivity, and maintain high quality standards.
Core Responsibilities Job Planning & Routing:
Analyze customer orders, engineering drawings, and specifications to create detailed, accurate production routings, work instructions, and manufacturing process plans.
Estimating & Quoting:
Prepare precise labor, material, and lead time estimates; collaborate with the sales team to develop competitive quotes and assess job feasibility.
Process Development:
Review prints for potential production issues, recommend cost-effective design improvements, and ensure parts are optimized for sheet metal fabrication and CNC machining processes.
CNC Programming & Tooling:
Oversee and/or perform CNC programming for fiber lasers, press brakes, mills, and lathes; coordinate nesting, tooling, and fixture requirements prior to job release.
Production Scheduling:
Develop and maintain accurate job schedules, lead-time projections, and shop capacity plans to ensure jobs are released to the floor at the right time with all necessary resources.
Team Leadership:
Directly supervise, train, and mentor pre-production staff (programmers and estimators) on best practices, software, equipment, and shop standards.
Programming & Technical Preparation:
Oversee or directly support programming (fiber lasers, press brakes, etc.), nesting, tooling, and fixture requirements prior to production.
Process Improvement:
Identify inefficiencies in pre-production workflows and implement lean initiatives to reduce lead times, minimize material waste, and improve overall shop throughput.
Cross-Functional Coordination:
Work closely with sales, purchasing, quality, and production teams to resolve technical issues, manage material availability, and ensure all pre-production deliverables meet quality and delivery expectations.
Required Skills and Qualifications Technical Skills:
Strong hands-on experience in sheet metal fabrication and/or CNC machining. Proficiency in reading and interpreting complex blueprints, GD&T, specifications, and technical documents.
Equipment Knowledge:
Deep understanding of sheet metal and machining equipment including fiber lasers, press brakes, welding, CNC lathes, and mills.
Software Proficiency:
Experience with CAD/CAM software, nesting programs, ERP/MRP systems, and Microsoft Office.
Management Skills:
Proven experience leading a team, production scheduling, and managing multiple projects in a fast-paced job shop environment.
Education & Experience:
Associate's degree or higher in Manufacturing, Engineering, or a related field preferred. Equivalent hands-on experience with strong on-the-job training will be considered.
Leadership:
Demonstrated success in a relevant leadership or senior technical role within a sheet metal or machining environment.
