Job Description This position performs a variety of skilled and unskilled tasks associated with the maintenance of the city's streets and road right-of-ways. The position operates a wide range of motorized and non-motorized equipment and tools, performs inspections and maintenance on tools and equipment that is assigned. Also assists other work divisions when assigned, performs snow plowing on roads, sidewalks, trails and parking lots. Assists with the construction and maintenance of trails and sidewalks. This is union position represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers, IUOE, Local 49.
Duties/Responsibilities Essential Job Functions:
Maintains street pavements by milling, paving, sweeping and pothole patching. Performs tree maintenance by trimming, pruning and complete removal when necessary. Inspects and maintains storm drainage systems. Performs trail and sidewalk maintenance and construction. Operates and maintains street maintenance machinery and equipment. Plows, sands, salts and scrapes ice and snow from streets, sidewalks and trails. Responds to and assists the public with street related needs. Performs street sign and signal maintenance. Assists other work divisions and departments when assigned. Performs tree and boulevard maintenance activities. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or apparent. At times, will supervise part-time/seasonal employees.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
A commitment to and belief in the organization's shared values. Possess a valid Class A commercial driver's license with tanker and air brake endorsements within 12 months of hire date. Enrolled in
FMCSA CDL
Clearinghouse at the time of interview. Some experience using an ipad/PC, email, MS Word. High school graduate or GED equivalent. One year street maintenance experience or equivalent. One year highway and/or street construction experience. One year experience in operating and maintaining a variety of street maintenance equipment. Experience in installing and maintaining culverts and drain piping One year experience in snow and ice control methods with a variety of equipment. Available to be on call for weekend and holiday work. Must be able to respond to the public works facility within 45 minutes.
Desired Qualifications:
Skilled paver operator. Skilled backhoe operator familiar with trenching and shoring techniques. Three years of street maintenance experience. Three years of highway and/or street maintenance construction experience. Possess a Class A commercial driver's license at time of interview. Graduate of a vocational/technical or union equipment operator training program.
Additional Information Knowledge of:
Bituminous pavement maintenance procedures and construction methods. The use of light and heavy equipment and maintenance vehicles. Equipment and hand tool usage. Basic safety methods. The placement and finishing of concrete and bituminous mixtures. Skilled in : The care and use of a variety of tools and equipment. Tree care maintenance/trimming procedures and seeding of turf. The operation and inspection of motor vehicles including dump trucks. The operation of light and heavy equipment.

Work independently with a minimal supervision, using sound judgement. Understand and execute written and verbal instructions. Respond to emergency situations and call-back per time limit. Respond professionally to residents and coworkers. Perform assigned tasks in a safe, efficient manner. Operate and maintain a variety of street maintenance equipment. Annual Adjustment:
Annual cost of living, with potential market adjustment, based on the Local 49 Labor agreement.
Skilled Based Pay:
Potential for an hourly differential $1.20/hour after 30 months of service and meeting specific criteria.
Merit Pay:
