Position Summary To provide for the safety and security of all members of the University community. To provide for the physical security of University property & enforce University and Departmental rules and regulations. Oversee the daily functions of DPS officers and contract security officers to ensure all services are delivered in a consistent, professional, and timely manner. Principal Duties & Responsibilities Position will have operational and administrative oversight of assigned shift(s). Must embrace a community policing/problem-solving approach to patrol responsibilities. Must be capable of Patrolling University properties via foot, bicycle, or vehicle. Plan, supervise, and review the activities of all shift personnel, including shift officers, regarding duties, posts, patrol areas, and dispatch to achieve maximum resource efficiency. Conduct daily shift-level briefing sessions and line inspections to ensure all personnel are properly informed and properly equipped to perform their daily duties. Supervise and direct front-line Public Safety officer response to calls for service and emergency incidents, including, but not limited to, fire alarms/fires, medical incidents, weather emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, disturbances, altercations, etc. May issue Timely Warnings or Crime Notices to the community in compliance with Clery Act mandates. Adheres to the University and the Department of Public Safety's rules, regulations, responsibilities, and procedures and ensures all assigned personnel do so as well. Complies with and is respectful of Superiors and their instructions, directives, and assignments. Keep superiors informed of performance or personnel issues and initiate and/or carry out appropriate corrective action, counseling, and training. Submits thorough and timely reports documenting any personnel matters, unusual occurrences, complaints, and/or crimes/incidents. Maintains a professional, formal, and approachable demeanor while on duty to foster effective public relations while interacting within the University community. Provide aid or services to the University community, including personal safety escorts, motor vehicle assistance, and room/bldg. locking/unlocking, bank runs, etc. … Interact professionally with all internal University members and external municipal partners/agencies (police, fire, ambulance, etc.). May be required to work special assignments, events, shifts, and extended hours depending upon the needs of the agency. May be required to fulfill Dispatch duties if needed. Assist in the development and delivery of safety and emergency management training programs for department personnel and the university community. Will not act, either on duty or off duty, in any manner that is detrimental, in the view of SHU, to the Mission or reputation of Sacred Heart University. Must maintain all applicable certifications and licensing, including firearm requirements, training, and ongoing qualifications. Essential physical job tasks include sitting, standing, or walking for sustained periods of time; climbing up/downstairs; bending, turning, reaching, and grasping. Visual acuity sufficient for reading ID cards/written materials, Hearing sufficient for perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels. Be able to work in various positions, including but not limited to stooping, standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, and squatting for extended periods of time. Be able to lift (indicate the weight minimum), pull, and push materials and equipment to complete the assigned job task. You may be required to work in extreme outdoor weather conditions (heat, snow, ice, rain, etc.). Perform other duties as directed by superiors. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Other Attributes Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field. Appropriate Law Enforcement experience may be substituted for a degree. Minimum of ten years of law enforcement or military experience required, or comparable public security experience. Minimum of two years serving in a supervisory-level law enforcement position or comparable leadership position in a non-law enforcement agency. Must have separated from law enforcement/military service in good standing. Must hold a valid State Driver's License Possess and maintain: CT State Security Guard Card and Class 1 License endorsement, or other comparable certification as may be required. If former LEO must be capable of meeting standards established by the Law Enforcement Officer's Safety Act (HR-218). Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. EMR/EMT certification Essential physical job tasks include walking, climbing stairs, driving emergency vehicles, conducting foot patrols in buildings, parking lots, and campus fields, and standing or moving for extended periods. Breaking up fights or preventing physical altercations. Directing large crowds during events or emergencies. Positioning barricades or moving equipment to manage public spaces and checkpoints. Directing traffic flow and setting up detours or roadblocks. Carrying and using protective gear and fire extinguishers. Administering CPR or first aid or using automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Carrying medical supplies to assist during emergencies and transporting patients or individuals needing help. Unusual Working Conditions May require working different shifts at various university campuses or facilities. May require working on weekends, holidays, and in adverse weather conditions.
