Public Service Officer Part-Time Barrington, Village of (IL) IL Posted Date 5/15/2026 Description The Village of Barrington Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for the part-time position of Public Service Officer (PSO). This civilian, uniformed role plays a vital support function within the department, assisting with non-criminal law enforcement duties and helping ensure the safety and well-being of the community. Scheduled hours are Monday through Friday, 2:45 -6:45 p.m. PSOs perform a wide variety of responsibilities that do not require the services of a sworn police officer including enforcement of parking ordinances, animal control, crossing guard duties, enforcing Village ordinances, and directing traffic. PSOs may also staff the front desk. This position is ideal for individuals who thrive in a public-facing, service-oriented environment and want to play an active role in supporting public safety. Qualified candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, strong interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure and manage stressful situations, knowledge of or ability to quickly learn Village ordinances and Police Department procedures, a Valid Illinois driver's license, and proficiency with basic computer systems and Microsoft Office applications. Familiarity with law enforcement-related documents and procedures and experience in customer service or public interaction roles is preferred. Link to Job Description. Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds regularly and more than 50 pounds occasionally. The role requires frequent work outdoors in varying weather conditions and potential exposure to hazardous or high-stress environments.
