  • $48,204 The Recreation Program Coordinator performs work in planning, organizing, promoting, implementing, and supervising programs and events for the Town Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PR&T) Department by providing quality customer service, administering organized programs, clinics, camps, and special events, and preparing and supervising the use of appropriate facilities.
This position requires work during the week, on weekends, on holidays, and on some nights. This is a 40-hour-a-week non-exempt position. These duties and responsibilities are not intended to be all-inclusive. Employee may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the town's ongoing needs. Plans, organizes, and promotes recreation programs, including athletics, summer camps, wellness classes, adult and youth programs, and special events. Performs administrative tasks such as utilizing a computer to complete projects, typing, copying, and faxing materials as needed, updating files, informing citizens of program status, and responding to inquiries in person, over the phone, or via email. Recruits, trains, assigns, and supervises volunteers to assist with program tasks. Maintains records of Recreation and Wellness Program volunteers and staff hours and sends reports to the Recreation Program Supervisor. Evaluates the effectiveness of camps, wellness, and recreational programs and recruits additional instructors when appropriate. Prepares and administers contracts for vendor operations and contracted instructors for all Wellness programs, clinics, and classes. Works a non-traditional work schedule, including nights and weekends, according to the needs of programs, with little or no supervision. Supervises other Recreation Program staff, including training, scheduling, disciplining, and providing input in recruiting, hiring, and promoting. Solicits private contributions for the Department. Provides assistance across all divisions of the PRT department as required. Coordinates and verifies activity schedules. Greets participants and enforces facility regulations and policies. Performs and supervises activities for Recreation and Wellness Programs, including but not limited to planning, set-up, directing, teaching, assisting, clean-up, maintenance, and managing volunteers, other recreation programs personnel, and participants. Ensures an environment of safety for all participants. Treats minor first-aid incidents, fills out accident reports, and provides a copy to the Recreation Program Supervisor. May be required to drive the activity bus for camps and programs. Maintains a clean work environment at all times. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Promotes recreation programs on the website and social media accounts. Creates flyers and maintains an efficient marketing plan. Qualifications Education and Experience Bachelor's Degree in Parks & Recreation, Early Childhood Education, Physical Education, or a related field, and two (2) years of experience in working with youth and recreation program planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job, such as those listed above, is required. Licenses and Professional Certifications Valid NC Driver's License Valid NC Commercial Driver License (CDL)

  • required within 6 months Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the standards, principles, practices, rules, and procedures of organized youth programs; the philosophy and objectives of public recreation; standard safety practices; various recreation facilities, materials, and equipment, their uses and maintenance requirements; the principles of supervision, organization, and administration; and the current literature, trends, and development in the field of recreation programs.
Skilled in planning, organizing, promoting, leading, supervising and monitoring the activities of others in relation to recreation programs; using time effectively and efficiently; exercising sound judgment in the application of programs, rules and procedures; planning, assigning and supervising the work of subordinates, and instructing them in proper work methods and procedures; gathering and analyzing information from a variety of sources, and preparing clear and concise reports from information; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; composing effective correspondence; establishing rapport, understanding, and confidence with participants and the general public; being flexible with unexpected situations that accompany working with the public; giving oral presentations before large groups of people; exercising tact and courtesy in frequent contact with business persons, public officials and the general public; using standard office machines, a computer and related software applications; and communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. The
ICS/NIMS
course minimums required for all employees include FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800. Additionally, employees assigned middle and upper-level responsibilities within incident operations may be required to complete additional follow-on courses deemed necessary by Emergency Management and Human Resources staff. Ability to represent the Town professionally and respectfully while interacting with a diverse set of individuals within the workplace and the community. Working Conditions Employee is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. When indoors, employee will be exposed to the lighting, temperature, and noise of an open floor-plan gymnasium environment and that of an office setting. When outdoors, employee may be frequently exposed to insects, dirt, grass, and weather elements including rain, wind, varying temperatures, etc. Physical Requirements Work is performed in an office environment, primarily at a desk, and frequently involves operating a computer. The employee must read and write, and interact with others in person, over the phone, and via other devices. The employee may move about within the facility to access file cabinets, documents, office machinery, and other equipment. Employee must be able to set up and break down equipment and operate timing devices. Travel is also required to outside job sites to perform the duties described above, as well as to attend meetings, trainings, events, and other business activities. The employee must be able to work for extended periods of time, sometimes under adverse conditions. Persons in this position frequently lift, carry, push and/or pull objects weighing up to 25 pounds. They also occasionally move objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and sometimes, but rarely, up to 100 pounds. Additionally, work may require standing, walking, running, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, lifting, carrying, and/or moving equipment, pushing, and pulling various objects and operating assigned equipment, including motor vehicles.
