Overview Join our dynamic healthcare team as a Registered Nurse specializing in Surgical and Orthopedic care! In this vital role, you will deliver expert nursing services to patients undergoing surgical procedures or orthopedic treatments, ensuring optimal recovery and comfort. Responsibilities Conduct thorough patient assessments including vital signs, physical examinations, and detailed medical histories to determine care needs. Prepare patients for surgery by explaining procedures, ensuring informed consent, and verifying all necessary documentation is complete. Administer medications, including IV infusions and injections, following aseptic techniques and hospital protocols. Monitor patients' vital signs and physiological responses during surgical procedures and post-operative recovery, adjusting care plans as needed. Assist with surgical procedures in the operating room (OR), ensuring sterile technique and proper instrument handling. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams such as anesthesiologists, surgeons, physical therapists, and case managers to coordinate comprehensive patient care. Educate patients and their families on post-surgical care, pain management strategies, mobility exercises, and discharge instructions. Document all patient interactions accurately using electronic health record (EHR) systems like Epic or Cerner while maintaining HIPAA compliance. Provide specialized orthopedic nursing interventions including wound suturing, ostomy care, and rehabilitation support. Support patients with complex needs such as trauma medicine cases at Level I or Level II trauma centers or those requiring ICU or PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) care. Qualifications Valid RN license with current state licensure required; additional certifications such as BLS (Basic Life Support) are essential. Extensive experience in surgical settings or orthopedic units preferred; familiarity with OR procedures is highly valued. Proficiency with EMR/EHR systems including Epic, Cerner, or Athenahealth for accurate documentation. Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and diagnostic evaluation techniques. Experience working in acute care environments such as hospitals or surgical centers; ICU or trauma center experience is a plus. Ability to perform complex skills such as IV insertion, venipuncture, catheterization, suturing, tube feeding management, and sterile processing techniques. Excellent patient assessment skills with the ability to recognize acute pain or complications early for prompt intervention. Knowledge of infection control practices and aseptic techniques to ensure patient safety during invasive procedures. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within diverse healthcare teams while providing compassionate patient care across various age groups including pediatrics and geriatrics.
