POSITION SUMMARY
The Shop Manager is a senior, hands-on technical leader responsible for overseeing daily shop operations while actively performing advanced mechanical work. This role serves as the primary point of coordination within the shop, ensuring repairs and maintenance are completed safely, efficiently, and to company standards. This role combines hands-on mechanical work with leadership responsibilities, including supervising technicians, maintaining quality control, and ensuring equipment is operational to support field demands. The ideal candidate is an expert-level mechanic with strong leadership skills and extensive experience in heavy equipment maintenance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Shop Leadership & Coordination Lead daily shop operations, including prioritizing repairs, coordinating workflow, and assigning tasks to mechanics and welders. Serve as the primary technical authority in the shop for complex diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance. Coordinate workflow, job assignments, and priorities among mechanics and technicians and work closely with Operations to align shop priorities with field equipment needs and schedules. Act as the go-to problem solver for urgent or high-impact equipment issues and provide guidance, direction, and oversight to shop personnel. Equipment Maintenance & Repair Perform advanced diagnostics, repairs, and troubleshooting on heavy equipment, trucks, grinders, excavators, loaders, service trucks, and semi-trucks. Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs across diesel engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, and electrical systems Inspect completed repairs to ensure quality, safety, and durability standards are met. Maintain accurate service logs, parts usage, and repair documentation. Maintenance Planning & Equipment Readiness Support preventive maintenance planning and scheduling to reduce downtime. Identify recurring equipment issues and recommend corrective actions or improvements. Provide input on equipment rebuild vs. replacement decisions. Safety & Compliance Enforce shop safety policies and ensure compliance with OSHA and company standards. Conduct safety checks and ensure proper use of PPE and tools. Parts Inventory Management & Parts Purchasing Oversee all aspects of parts purchasing to ensure timely availability of materials required for repairs and maintenance. Ensure cost-effective procurement by monitoring pricing, evaluating vendors, and preventing overpayment. Maintain accountability for accurate parts inventory, including proper tracking, recording, and reporting of inventory levels and usage. Establish and enforce inventory control processes to minimize shortages, delays, and excess stock, and oversee parts organization and accessibility. Coordinate with vendors, purchasing, and receiving to ensure efficient ordering, delivery, and stocking of parts. Manage parts and inventory spending to stay within the established shop budget, identifying and implementing cost-saving opportunities where possible. Mentorship & Team Development Mentor and support mechanics and shop personnel through hands-on guidance and training. Promote accountability, craftsmanship, and a safety-first culture within the shop. Assist leadership with performance feedback related to technical work and shop practices. Quality Control, Documentation & Coordination Ensure accurate documentation of repairs, parts usage, and maintenance activities. Coordinate with Purchasing and Receiving regarding parts availability and urgent needs. Communicate repair status, risks, and timelines to Operations leadership. Ensure all repairs meet company standards and operational requirements. Track equipment status and ensure readiness for field operations
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
Minimum 10+ years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance or mechanical repair. Proven experience serving as a lead mechanic, or shop foreman.
Skills:
Expert-level diagnostic and repair skills across diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and structural components. Strong leadership and communication skills. Ability to manage priorities in a fast-paced, high-demand environment. Education /
Certifications:
High school diploma or GED required. Valid driver's license required.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work performed primarily in a shop environment with exposure to noise, heat, fumes, and heavy equipment. Frequent standing, bending, lifting, and hands-on mechanical work. Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks.
WORKING HOURS
