Job Description
Retail General Manager Ortega's on Main - Durango, Colorado Position Overview Ortega's on Main is looking for an experienced Retail General Manager to lead our new store in downtown Durango. The store will offer a carefully selected mix of Native American jewelry and Western and Southwestern apparel, accessories, gifts, and other merchandise. The General Manager will be responsible for the overall performance of the store, including sales, staffing, customer service, merchandising, inventory, and daily operations. This is a hands-on position that requires working the sales floor, assisting customers, coaching employees, and staying closely involved in the details of the business. Key Responsibilities Take ownership of the store's sales, gross margin, profitability, customer service, and daily operations. Work directly with customers and lead the team in providing knowledgeable, friendly service across both everyday and higher-priced merchandise. Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and coach employees while maintaining appropriate staffing and labor costs. Keep the sales floor attractive, organized, properly stocked, and easy to shop. Oversee receiving, pricing, tagging, transfers, inventory counts, and other inventory procedures. Maintain strong controls for jewelry and other high-value merchandise, including shrink, damages, discounts, returns, and inventory adjustments. Review sales and inventory results and work with director of retail on purchasing, pricing, reorders, and merchandise opportunities. Ensure cash-handling, opening, closing, deposit, safety, and company procedures are followed consistently. Qualifications At least three years of retail management experience, preferably in specialty retail or a store with a broad merchandise assortment. Experience managing employees, schedules, payroll, inventory, and store-level financial performance. Strong sales ability and a genuine interest in working directly with customers. Experience with jewelry, Western wear, apparel, footwear, gifts, or similar merchandise is preferred. Able to read sales reports and use the information to make practical operating and merchandising decisions. Organized, dependable, and comfortable taking ownership of results. Familiarity with the Durango market, Western lifestyle, or Native American art and jewelry is helpful but not required. Schedule and Physical RequirementsThis is a full-time position requiring a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and peak tourism periods as needed. The position involves extended periods of standing and walking, occasional use of stairs or ladders, and the ability to lift and move merchandise weighing up to 40 pounds
