Job Description

The Valve Shop Supervisor is responsible for leading and managing a team of hourly technicians in the inspection, repair, and testing of tank car valves and related components. This role ensures all Valve Shop activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards and company procedures. The Supervisor will coordinate daily operations, monitor quality control, provide hands-on technical guidance, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and teamwork. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity and reliability of tank car systems, supporting Eagle Railcar Services' commitment to safety and service excellence.
Responsibilities:
Schedule valve repair work to meet customer deadlines and service expectations. Monitor and manage shop efficiency, workflow, and resource utilization. Write supplemental work sheets to ensure accurate billing for un-estimated tasks. Conduct in-process inspections to verify quality before valves and cars leave the department. Lead daily safety, quality, and production meetings with the Valve Shop team. Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and health policies and procedures. Apply technical knowledge of production methods and equipment capabilities to optimize repair and inspection processes. Manage, mentor, coach, and train team members to build a high-performing workforce. Participate in root-cause investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions to improve operations and prevent recurrence.
Requirements/Experience:
High School Diploma, GED, or High School Equivalency required. Bachelor's degree preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in railcar inspection, testing, and repair. Prior supervisory or management experience required. Strong knowledge of FRA regulations and AAR Interchange Rules related to railcar inspection and testing. Ability to read and interpret technical prints and drawings, including welding and nondestructive testing symbols. Understanding of valve inspection, disassembly, and testing methods common to process valves. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn proprietary database systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Regulations and Regulatory requirements:
Ability to read, interpret, and follow Product Data Sheets (PDS) and Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Knowledge of general safety practices and standards in a heavy industrial environment. Must consistently follow all safety rules and wear required PPE. Must be clean-shaven at all times to comply with
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134
for respirator use.
Working Conditions:
Candidate must be able to perform the following physical tasks: Working around heavy moving equipment Work outdoors for extended periods, in extreme weather conditions. Work in confined spaces and at elevated heights. Climb, squat, bend, twist, and regularly lift up-to 50 pounds or more to accomplish work tasks. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, steel-toed work boots, and the ability to wear a respirator.
