Job Description

General Manager - Sales & Revenue Growth Furniture, Appliance & High-Ticket Retail Stu's Home Improvement Outlet Stu's Home Improvement Outlet is searching for a proven sales leader, strong closer, and hands-on General Manager who can take ownership of our store, increase revenue, build a high-performing sales team, and run the day-to-day operation. This is not a traditional retail Store Manager position. We are not looking for someone whose experience is primarily maintaining an established corporate retail operation, writing schedules, supervising hourly employees, and executing programs developed by a corporate office. We need a builder. We need a closer. We need a leader who knows how to create revenue. The right person should be able to walk into our store, get on the sales floor, identify missed opportunities, help close customers, coach our existing team, recruit additional talent, and immediately begin improving sales performance. YOUR #1
RESPONSIBILITY:
GROW REVENUE
You will be directly accountable for store sales and revenue growth. We need someone who understands that when sales are behind goal, the General Manager doesn't simply report the numbers — the General Manager takes action to change them.
You will be expected to:
Personally step into sales opportunities and help close deals Lead from the sales floor Establish daily, weekly, and monthly sales expectations Hold each salesperson accountable for production Coach salespeople in real time Improve closing percentages and average transaction value Train objection handling, negotiating, financing, upselling, and closing Create energy and urgency on the sales floor Ensure every customer is actively engaged Ensure leads and unsold customers receive consistent follow-up Recruit, hire, train, and develop productive salespeople Identify underperformance quickly and address it Build a competitive, accountable, results-driven sales culture
YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SELL
This is not a desk job. When the store is busy, you're on the floor. When a salesperson is struggling with a customer, you step in. When we're behind goal, you help create the plan and execute it. We want someone who can teach people how to sell because they have personally been successful at selling and closing.
BUILD A SALES TEAM
DON'T JUST MANAGE ONE
Experienced salespeople aren't always easy to find in our market. We aren't looking for a manager who uses that as an excuse. A major responsibility of this position will be identifying people with the raw talent to sell and developing them into successful sales professionals. We want someone who can recognize competitiveness, personality, work ethic, hunger, communication ability, and coachability — even if the candidate doesn't already have years of furniture or appliance experience. You should be capable of teaching: Customer engagement Qualifying customers Product demonstrations Building value Objection handling Negotiating Financing and payment options Upselling and cross-selling Creating urgency Asking for the sale Customer follow-up Closing You will be expected to continuously recruit and build a bench of sales talent, not wait until we're short-staffed before hiring.
RUN THE OPERATION
While sales and revenue growth are the priority, you will also take ownership of the day-to-day operation of the store.
Responsibilities include:
Sales leadership Staffing and scheduling Recruiting and hiring Employee training and development Performance management Customer experience Merchandising and store presentation Inventory execution Lead management and follow-up Marketing execution Warehouse coordination Cash and deposit controls Opening and closing procedures Operational standards Problem resolution We need someone who identifies problems and solves them rather than waiting for the owner to discover them.
EXPERIENCE WE'RE LOOKING FOR
We strongly prefer leadership experience in a commission-driven, high-ticket, or performance-based sales environment, such as: Furniture Appliances Mattresses Automotive Flooring Home improvement Electronics Remodeling/home services Other high-ticket sales organizations Managing a large retail store alone does not qualify someone for this position. We are specifically looking for demonstrated experience producing revenue, closing sales, leading salespeople, recruiting talent, and developing people who produce revenue.
BE PREPARED TO PROVE YOUR RESULTS
If selected for an interview, be prepared to discuss specific numbers and examples, including: Monthly revenue you were personally responsible for Sales goals and quotas your team carried Revenue growth achieved under your leadership Number of salespeople you personally recruited Salespeople you personally trained and developed Your experience personally closing customers Sales KPIs you managed How you handled underperforming salespeople Examples of top performers you personally developed Specific examples of turning around an underperforming sales team We aren't looking for general management philosophy. We want real numbers, real examples, and real results.
YOUR FIRST 30 DAYS
We expect our General Manager to quickly evaluate the business and begin making measurable improvements.
Your immediate priorities will be:
1. Increase sales and revenue. 2. Evaluate and coach the existing sales team. 3. Recruit additional sales talent. 4. Improve closing and customer follow-up. 5. Establish daily sales accountability. 6. Identify operational problems costing the company sales or profit and fix them. 7. Establish a clear plan for building a stronger sales organization. We are not looking for someone who needs several months before taking action.
COMPENSATION, SIGN-ON BONUS & RELOCATION
We understand that finding the right leader may require looking beyond our immediate market. We are willing to invest in the right person. For a highly qualified candidate with a demonstrated track record of building sales teams and growing revenue, the total opportunity may include: Competitive base compensation Performance-based bonus/incentive opportunity Sign-on bonus may be available Relocation assistance may be available Meaningful financial upside based on performance Advancement opportunity as the company grows Our philosophy is simple: If you can build the team, grow revenue, and produce results, you should have the opportunity to earn more. Sign-on bonus and relocation assistance, if offered, will depend upon the candidate's experience, qualifications, relocation requirements, and final employment agreement.
ABOUT STU'S HOME IMPROVEMENT OUTLET
Stu's Home Improvement Outlet is a fast-paced retail business selling appliances, furniture, flooring, mattresses, and home improvement products, including closeouts, overstock, open-box, scratch-and-dent, and liquidation merchandise. Our inventory changes constantly, which creates tremendous opportunities for strong salespeople who know how to create excitement, build value, negotiate, and close. We operate differently from traditional corporate retail. We are entrepreneurial, fast-moving, hands-on, and focused on growth.
WHO WILL SUCCEED HERE?
You may be a strong fit if you are: A proven closer A strong sales coach Highly competitive Motivated by measurable results Experienced leading sales teams Excellent at recruiting Capable of developing inexperienced sales talent Comfortable holding people accountable Willing to have difficult performance conversations Hands-on and highly visible Fast-moving and decisive Comfortable making decisions Comfortable in an entrepreneurial environment Able to operate without layers of corporate support Someone who takes ownership Someone who wants to build something
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are not hiring someone to simply maintain a store.
We are hiring someone to:
BUILD REVENUE. BUILD SALESPEOPLE. BUILD A SALES CULTURE. BUILD A STRONGER OPERATION.
And ultimately, help us build the next stage of this company. If you have personally sold, personally closed, recruited and developed successful salespeople, led a high-performing sales team, and can demonstrate your results with numbers, we want to talk to you. I'd run the Indeed title as "General Manager - Sales & Revenue Growth | Relocation Available." That title should do a much better job of signaling that you're looking for a revenue-producing sales leader, not another traditional department-store manager.
Pay:
$100,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year
Benefits:
401(k) Dental insurance Employee discount Flexible schedule Health insurance Paid time off Relocation assistance Vision insurance People with a criminal record are encouraged to apply Application Question(s): How many salespeople have you personally recruited, hired, trained, and managed at one time? Describe a specific example where you took over an underperforming sales team or location and increased revenue. What were sales before, what did you change, and what were sales afterward? What experience do you personally have closing high-ticket sales? Please describe what you sold, your approximate average transaction size, and your individual sales performance.
