Book RePort is an independent bookstore and café opening in the heart of Port Washington. More than a bookstore, we are building a community gathering place where books, coffee, conversation, and connection come together. We are seeking an Assistant Store Manager who is excited about books, community engagement, customer service, and helping a small business grow. This is an opportunity to play a meaningful role in shaping the culture and daily operations of a new independent bookstore. Position Overview The Assistant Store Manager supports the Store Manager and Ownership Team in overseeing daily bookstore and café operations. This role combines customer service, staff leadership, merchandising, inventory management, event support, and operational oversight. The ideal candidate is organized, dependable, customer-focused, and comfortable taking initiative. They should enjoy working with people, solving problems, and helping create a welcoming environment for customers and staff alike. Key Responsibilities Leadership & Team Support Serve as manager-on-duty when scheduled Support and coach booksellers and café staff Assist with employee training and onboarding Help maintain a positive, collaborative workplace culture Communicate operational needs and concerns to management Customer Experience Deliver exceptional customer service Assist customers with book recommendations, special orders, and purchases Resolve customer concerns professionally and effectively Help promote memberships, events, book clubs, and store programs Store Operations Assist with opening and closing procedures Support daily cash handling and POS operations Monitor store presentation and merchandising standards Receive, process, and shelve inventory Assist with inventory management and stock replenishment Help maintain store cleanliness and organization Café Operations Support café service during busy periods Ensure cleanliness, food safety, and operational standards are maintained Monitor café inventory and supply needs Events & Community Engagement Assist with author events, story times, book clubs, and community programs Support event setup, execution, and breakdown Help create a welcoming experience for guests and authors Qualifications Previous retail, bookstore, café, hospitality, or customer service management experience preferred Strong interpersonal and communication skills Demonstrated leadership ability and sound judgment Organized and detail-oriented Comfortable multitasking in a fast-paced environment Ability to work evenings and weekends Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and stand for extended periods Compensation & Benefits Competitive hourly wage ($23-$26 per hour, depending on experience) Employee discount on books and merchandise Complimentary coffee and tea during shifts Paid sick leave in accordance with New York State law Paid personal days after eligibility requirements are met Opportunity to help build and grow a new independent bookstore from the ground up Why Join Book RePort?
