About Queens County Farm Museum Queens County Farm Museum (QCFM) is one of the longest continuously farmed sites in New York State, with over 325 years of continuous farming. Through educational programs, events, and museum services, we educate the public about the significance of Queens County's agricultural and horticultural past while promoting awareness of present-day sustainable agricultural and horticultural practices. QCFM is a New York City Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and a member of the Historic House Trust of New York City. Livestock Assistant (Part-Time)Position Overview Queens County Farm Museum seeks a dependable and hardworking Livestock Assistant to support the daily operation and maintenance of the Farm's livestock areas. Reporting to the Director of Education and working closely with the Livestock Manager, the Livestock Assistant is responsible for assisting with the care and wellbeing of the Farm's animals while helping to maintain a clean, safe, and organized environment for both animals and staff. This is a physically demanding, hands-on position that involves daily animal care, stall and coop cleaning, paddock maintenance, groundskeeping, and general farm upkeep. The ideal candidate will have previous livestock experience, enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions, and take pride in maintaining high standards of cleanliness and animal welfare.
Key Responsibilities:
Animal Care Feed, water, and monitor livestock including cattle, sheep, goats, alpacas, pigs, and poultry. Conduct routine animal health and welfare checks and report any concerns to supervisors. Collect eggs and assist with daily livestock management tasks. Safely handle livestock and assist with moving animals between paddocks and enclosures as needed. Cleaning & Facility Maintenance Muck stalls, remove manure, and maintain clean livestock housing areas. Clean and maintain chicken coops, barns, paddocks, shelters, and animal enclosures. Maintain feed rooms, storage areas, and other staff-only spaces in a clean, safe, and organized manner. Assist with mowing paddocks, removing poison ivy and invasive vegetation, and maintaining livestock grounds. Perform routine cleaning and upkeep to ensure all livestock areas remain safe and presentable for animals, staff, and visitors. Farm Operations Operate tractors and other farm equipment as directed. Assist with fence inspections, minor repairs, and general livestock infrastructure maintenance. Support the Livestock Manager with seasonal livestock projects. Follow all farm safety, biosecurity, and operational procedures. Additional Responsibilities Assist with livestock-related educational programs and public events as needed. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Education or Livestock Manager. QualificationsRequired Previous hands-on livestock care experience is required. Applicants should have experience working with farm animals in a professional, educational, agricultural, or volunteer setting. Ability to safely work around and handle multiple livestock species. Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, kneeling, walking uneven terrain, and working outdoors in all weather conditions. Willingness to perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and groundskeeping tasks. Comfort working around manure, mud, dust, insects, animal waste, and other conditions common to a working farm. Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Preferred Experience operating tractors or other equipment. Experience with fencing, grounds maintenance, or basic repairs. Valid driver's license. Interest in animal care, environmental education, and public-facing farm operations.
