Job Description

Technical Services Librarian/Associate Librarian, Plainville Public Library (Plainville)

We are looking for someone to join the energetic Plainville Public Library team where we do a lot of great things for our town with a population of just over 10,000. The successful candidate will catalog and maintain our growing collection of over 40,000 items in many formats with a robust Library of Things and museum passes collection. They will serve the public at the service desk and as a passport agent with the utmost customer service. A person in this position is responsible for the preparation of all materials for public use and their written or electronic records. They ensure access to library materials in a timely manner. They may assume the duties of the circulation staff in their absence or unusual situations.

Essential Functions Include:

Responsible for the preparation of all print and non-print materials for public use, including but not limited to: jackets, files, labels, barcodes, date due, repackaging, security, item identification

Assigns all new materials received by the library proper cataloging and call numbers according to the Dewey Decimal system and the American Library Association Cataloging Rules

Creates catalog records and/or modify existing records. Maintains these files accurately and timely

Maintains files, statistics as required

Maintains assets and software for library of things and museum passes

Maintains whereabouts of collection by monitoring transit items and the Commonwealth Catalog

Uploads orders into catalog

Orders replacements for lost/damaged items

Provides reference and reader's advisory in person, online or on the phone

Trains and supervises work of volunteers in their department

Interprets policies and procedures

Recommends procedural changes as necessary Mends and discards items. Withdraws records as required

Provides inventory control of library and office supplies. Organizes supply shelves and file cabinets

Monitors department supply expenditures to ensure they remain within approved limits

Checks incoming orders for accuracy, forwards notification of received orders to director

Assists with opening and closing procedures and at circulation desk as needed

Ensures staff is well versed in finding library materials and using library software, may create worksheets, flyers, and teaching tools for the benefit of staff

May represent the library at various meetings and programs

Processes passport applications in accordance with US Department of State regulations and stays up to date on yearly training

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

A college degree is required. Experience in a library is required. Graduate degree in library science, a plus. Must have the qualifications to become a certified Passport Acceptance Agent.

Licenses/Certificates:

Must complete training and become a certified Passport Acceptance Agent upon hire and recertify each year.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Candidates must have knowledge of library technologies along with hands- on knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials, and practices, especially cataloging. They should demonstrate organizational skills with the ability to prioritize. Candidates need familiarity with computers and applications in relation to the Library ILS system and how the public will interact with the data. They will have the ability to use digital resources, ebooks, social media and internet connected devices. Candidates will be able to deal with the public in a courteous and efficient manner and be able to interpret and relate information effectively.
