Aug 31, 2026 Job Description Canton High School is seeking an exceptional and dynamic candidate to serve as the School Adjustment Counselor for the first half of the 2026-2027 school year, with a start date of 8/31/26. The School Adjustment Counselor will join a vibrant and supportive team that places a high priority on collaboration, creativity, flexibility, and commitment to the goals of the District and to our students, families and staff. The Counseling Department is made up of 6 School Counselors (including the Director of Counseling), 3 School Adjustment Counselors, and 1 School Psychologist. We also maintain a comprehensive Student Services department to support a wide range of learners during their time at Canton High School. Canton High School is an inclusive community for all students and staff and serves over 960 students in grades 9-12. JOB SUMMARY
The School Adjustment Counselor works with individuals, groups, and families to facilitate students' adjustment and success within the school environment. The counselor will address a variety of student issues, including mental illness, family stress, and social/emotional challenges.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Support the inclusion of a diverse student population through cultural and family engagement Provide individual and/or group counseling to students, as needed, relative to social and emotional issues that impact engagement and achievement Provide direct service for individuals identified through Individual Education Plans (IEP) and 504 Accommodation Plans Observe students in the classroom and provide consultation to the teachers when necessary Provide social skills training to students, as well as follow-up consultation as needed Coordinate with outside agencies for students who have hospital or therapeutic placements due to emotional disabilities. Provide intervention with students on conflict mediation, de-escalation, and peer mediation Serve as a member of the Crisis Team, where applicable Consult, assist, and implement behavior assessments for identified students Maintain appropriate documentation, including progress reports for students on IEPs Collaborate with faculty and staff on students' needs and progress Act as liaison with outside providers and therapists Collaborate with School Nurse, School Psychologist, and other school staff members as needed Participate in the Student Response Team, as needed, during school hours Attend 504 meetings and IEP meetings Participate in department and building-based professional development and meetings, as well as parent/guardian meetings Participate in DESE hearings or mediations as needed Perform other duties specifically articulated within the collective bargaining agreement as assigned by building principal and/or District administration
Qualifications:
Master's in Social Work, Psychology, or Counseling from a school accredited by the Department of Education Massachusetts School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor Certification A minimum of three years of post-Master's experience, including at least 1-2 years of school system experience, preferred Proven ability to relate to a variety of constituencies, including but not limited to: administrators, parents/guardians, teachers, students, other school staff, and providers Outstanding written and verbal communication skills Well-organized with excellent leadership abilities Exceptional interpersonal and presentation skills Working knowledge of relevant technologies: internet and email systems; word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet software; and educational software Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the school department may find appropriate and acceptable
