Job Description
The Crossing Guard assists in ensuring the safety of children and other pedestrians crossing designated streets and intersections near schools during arrival and dismissal times. This position plays an essential role in promoting traffic and pedestrian safety by monitoring intersections, controlling traffic flow, and modeling safe crossing practices.
Schedule:
This position works Monday through Friday during the Iowa City Community School District school season.Morning Shift:
Monday through Friday, 7:25 a.m. to 8:10 a.m.Afternoon Shift:
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.Thursday Afternoon Shift:
1:45 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Crossing Guards are paid for a minimum of 10 hours per week during the active school season. Safely stop and direct vehicular traffic to allow children and pedestrians to cross streets in designated areas. Maintain awareness of surroundings to anticipate potential hazards or unsafe situations. Communicate and cooperate with police officers, school staff, and the public to promote a safe environment. Report unsafe driver behaviors, traffic concerns, or incidents to the Police Department promptly. Display professional and courteous conduct at all times while representing the City. Ensure the crossing zone is clear before signaling pedestrians to cross. Arrive promptly and remain at the assigned post for the entire scheduled shift. Use and maintain City-issued safety equipment such as reflective vests, stop paddles, and signage. Perform other duties as assigned. Must be at least 18 years of age. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including cold, heat, rain, and snow. Ability to stand for extended periods and react quickly to potential hazards. Must successfully complete a background check. Reliable and punctual attendance required. Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with children and adults. Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements Work is performed outdoors in and around traffic and school zones during morning and afternoon school hours. The position requires standing and walking for extended periods in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, wind, and extreme temperatures. Employees are exposed to vehicle traffic, noise, and exhaust fumes and must remain alert and attentive at all times to ensure pedestrian safety. The role involves repetitive arm movements to signal traffic and occasional bending or turning. Quick response to sudden or unsafe traffic situations is essential. High-visibility apparel and stop paddles are provided and must be worn or used at all times while on duty. Work is typically performed independently at assigned intersections under limited supervision. Punctuality and reliability are critical, as coverage directly impacts student safety.Similar remote jobs
