JOB DECRIPTION
The School Social Worker promotes and enhances the overall academic mission by providing services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and address barriers to learning and achievement. The School Social Worker significantly contributes to the development of a healthy, safe, and caring environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The School Social Worker's principle task is to empower students, families, and school personnel to access available opportunities and resources that develop each student's potential. Integrated into all major functions are home, school, community assimilation; diversity and cultural competence; dropout prevention; graduation awareness; and adherence to federal and state statutes, professional development and practices, School Social Work Standards and the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics. Assessment of Student, Family, and School Needs Effectively and appropriately assesses and addresses the needs, characteristics, and interactions of students, families, LEA personnel, and community. Advocacy Advocates for appropriate services for students and their families. Consults and collaborates with stakeholders on behalf of students and their families. Program Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation Effectively plans, implements, and evaluates programs that promote student and family success. Encourages parents to be actively involved in their children's educational experiences. Accountability Advocates, facilitates, and contributes to School Social Worker accountability for outcomes aligned with local, state, and federal policies and guidelines.
Training and Licensure:
School Social Workers are educated at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Licensure of School Social Workers in North Carolina is handled by the Licensure Division in the Department of Public Instruction, upon recommendation of DPI-approved social work programs. Licensure requires either a bachelor's degree or a master's degree from a social work program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and a school social work practicum experience in a public school. Individual colleges and universities will have additional and varied course requirements. The Department of Public Instruction requires continuing education for all School Social Workers.
The School Social Worker:
Facilitates the implementation of federal and state education regulations Addresses child abuse and neglect, due process, and liability issues
Working Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. •All employees are to adhere to ALL of Richmond County Schools Board of Education Policies.
