As a biologist, you will be a staff expert in the fields of water quality, terrestrial and aquatic biology, botany and environmental permitting. You will acquire permits and obtain local government approval for the impacts of highway construction projects and other department activities in and around wetlands and waterways. If you are a current State of Oregon employee, you must apply through your employee Workday profile A day in the life: Review project proposals and planned maintenance actions to resolve the need for environmental permits or clearances. Act as the liaison between ODOT project teams and external regulatory agencies to ensure projects are in compliance with environmental regulations and requirements. Work cohesively with designers from different work sections to prepare permit documentation, mediate differences and help develop a consensus for final plans. Provide technical expertise regarding storm water permitting requirements. Provide guidance to construction and maintenance personnel, technical staff and managers regarding permit requirements for transportation projects. Evaluate and assess the impact of transportation projects on biological resources within the project area of potential impact. Perform botanical, faunal and other field surveys for species potentially affected by transportation projects. Hybrid remote work opportunities available after the six month trial service period! Work is performed 50% in an office and 50% in the field and may require working long hours and occasional overnight travel. Office work requires extensive computer use which includes ArcGis and Microsoft programs. Field work requires working near traffic hazards, construction equipment, moving around rough and uneven terrain, working around flowing streams and working in inclement weather. Minimum qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in an environmental science, a physical science, a natural science, engineering, or a closely-related field AND two years of environmental analysis or resource project management experience.

Note:

Three additional years of environmental analysis or resource project management experience may substitute for the bachelor's degree.

Special qualifications:

Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid US driver license and an acceptable driving record. Skill in technical writing skills and the ability to organize a large workload with varying timelines and shifting priorities. Experience working outside, in streams and over rough, uneven terrain.
