Join the Utah State Historic Preservation Office within the Department of Cultural and Community Engagement as the Utah Public Archaeologist and bring your passion to sharing all aspects of Utah's 13,000 years of human history. This position will focus on connecting the past to present in the most creative ways possible. Key Responsibilities Main point of contact for the public for archaeological topics, including presentations, workshops, and other opportunities Organize and coordinate Archaeology & Preservation Month events each May. Division-wide resource for public outreach and support Oversight of the Public Archaeology Teaching Collections (and support ongoing legacy curation) Mentorship of interns and temporary employees in the Public Archaeology sector Coordinate with archaeologists and museum professionals to elevate their work into the public sector Support Section 106 and UCA 404 Compliance reviews for archaeological resources to free up the Compliance Archaeologist for more public-facing opportunities
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of Great Basin, Colorado Plateau and Utah-specific archaeological resources 5+ years of experience as an archaeologist or closely aligned field Excellent written and verbal communication skills Excellent customer service skills Excellent collaboration and critical thinking skills Experience working with a variety of different public groups (professionals, vocationalists, youth, indigenous, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Archaeology, Historic Preservation, or a closely related field of study Currently hold a Public Lands Policy Coordinating Office permit for Principal Investigator, or can receive one upon hire Supplemental Information Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, being subject to possible physical attack, etc. Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
