What We Want We are seeking an experienced, detail‑oriented laboratory animal care professional who thrives in a hands‑on supervisory role and is committed to excellence in animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and team leadership. The ideal candidate brings several years of large laboratory animal care experience (including dogs, cats, pigs, sheep, goats and other ruminants) , demonstrates strong supervisory, organizational, and communication skills, and is comfortable balancing staff oversight with daily animal husbandry and facility operations. The ideal candidate will also possess the a bility to work indoors with large animals in confined spaces. This individual works independently, collaborates effectively with researchers of various backgrounds and regulatory bodies, and maintains high standards across conventional, SPF, biohazard, and barrier facilities while ensuring compliance with AAALAC standards, institutional policies, and all applicable regulations. Who We Are The Comparative Medicine Program (CMP) enhances excellence in research and teaching at Texas A&M through high quality animal care. We provide a variety of services to researchers at the university through standard and specialized facilities. These services include the procurement of animals and animal husbandry supplies, provision of veterinary care, use of CMP surgical facilities, a polyclonal antibody production service, technical support services, and animal use training services. Other Requirements and Factors:
Please note this is considered an essential role. Persons considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellation, etc. must report to work and remain on duty unless relieved by the direct supervisor. Must be able to work outside of normal business hours, such as Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday. Must work weekends and holidays as required. Responsibilities Direct Supervision
  • Supervises and oversees the day-to-day activities and responsibilities of CMP animal care staff.
Coordinates staff training. Reviews performance appraisals, work allocations, task completion, and teaches appropriate work techniques and procedures. Interacts and communicates effectively with university staff and represents the unit during inspections by IACUC, AAALAC, NIH, CDC, USDA and others. Animal Handling and Husbandry
  • Performs routine and non-routine husbandry duties and cares for research animals for assigned conventional, specific pathogen free (SPF), biohazard contained, and barrier reared laboratory animal colonies.
Handles semi-technical activities including blood collection, diet preparation, euthanasia, and medication techniques. Screens new laboratory animals prior to introduction into colonies, ensuring safety standards are maintained and isolates infected animals. Cleans, maintains, and documents maintenance and sanitation reports for assigned laboratory animal care and cage washing areas. Operates, cleans, maintains, and conducts minor repairs to laboratory animal cages and equipment including cage washers and autoclaves. Facility Oversight
  • Monitors overall animal husbandry activities and the care and maintenance of assigned CMP facility.
Ensures assigned facility adheres to departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) standards, and all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations and policies concerning laboratory animal care and use. Operations
  • Maintains inventories and initiates orders for laboratory animals, feed, equipment, and supplies for facility operations.
Transports animals, feed, and materials by operating a university owned motor vehicle. Assists with billing activities and cost accounting.
Qualifications Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. Four years of related experience in laboratory animal care. Successful completion of a formal Laboratory Animal Science Course may substitute for three months of laboratory animal care experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Must be able to obtain State of Texas class "C" vehicle driver license within 30 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Assists with billing activities and cost accounting.
