09 Aug 2026 BOKU University is currently inviting applications for the position of a Full Professor of Crop Breeding and Genomics BOKU University (Vienna, Austria) seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Crop Breeding and Genomics with 1st March 2027. The position is offered in accordance with §98 of the 2002 Universities Act in the form of an ongoing contract. BOKU University, the "Alma Mater Viridis", is the University of Sustainability and Life Sciences. It is BOKU's task to make a key contribution to the conservation and protection of resources for future generations through its wide variety of expertise. Combining natural sciences, engineering plus social and economic sciences, its aim is to increase knowledge of the ecologically and economically sustainable use of natural resources. With 10,000 students and over 3,000 staff members, BOKU is one of Europe's leading life science universities. The professorship is assigned to the Institute of Crop Breeding and Genomics, which is part of the Department of Agricultural Sciences (boku.ac.at/en/agri ). The aim of this Department is the development of sustainable production processes that serve to safeguard and enhance the quality of life by considering the entire production, supply, and value chain of biogenic raw materials. The Institute of Crop Breeding and Genomics addresses these goals utilizing population and quantitative genetics as well as modern phenotyping and genomics tools for the genetic improvement of cereals and other arable crops. The professorship in Crop Breeding and Genomics represents this field at BOKU University on a national and international level. Applicants are expected to have an excellent research record in one or more of the following areas: Classical crop breeding approaches related to improving the resilience and resistance to abiotic/biotic stresses as well as productivity/quality traits of crops. High-throughput or novel phenotyping and data-driven breeding technologies. Quantitative genetics, genomics and predictive breeding. Novel genomic and/or biotechnological tools for crop genetic improvement. High-quality, practice-oriented and interdisciplinary research in cooperation with institutes from BOKU University is desired. Willingness to actively participate in the further development of the newly established BOKU Research & Training Farm is expected from the successful applicant. Cooperations with national and international research institutions, as well as with partners from public administration and the private sector are expected as part of the research strategy at the Institute of Crop Breeding and Genomics. Co-operations with partners in the Global South are considered an additional advantage. Other responsibilities include teaching theoretical and practical subject-specific courses in German and English, and supervising bachelor's and master's theses and dissertations. Active involvement in the further development of the curriculum is expected, as is participation in international cooperation networks and doctoral programmes. Active participation in the strategic development of the Department of Agricultural Sciences is required. Other tasks include participation in public relations and third mission activities, collaboration in relevant priority and cooperation programs, and active participation in the self-administration of BOKU University. Job specifications A teaching qualification (venia docendi) in the relevant field obtained at an Austrian university or an equivalent international qualification, or a subject-relevant academic qualification, that is equivalent to a habilitation. Relevant research experience, national and international reputation and ability to network. Excellent publication activity in the field. Relevant experience and competence in teaching, guidance of scientific work, as well as the supervision of junior scientists (PhD students). Experience in teaching courses in German and English. Experience in the successful acquisition, implementation and management of research projects. Cooperation with national and international research institutions as well as with partners from public administration and the private sector. Management and leadership skills, including skills in gender and diversity management, inclusiveness and accessibility in communication; communication and teamwork skills. Excellent knowledge of written and spoken German and English, or a willingness to acquire sufficient German language skills within the first two years after starting the position.
