Senior Formulation Scientist Probiotics & Nutraceuticals

Job Overview:

The Senior Formulation Scientist supports the development and optimization of probiotic and nutraceutical formulations under the direction of the Director of R&D. This role is responsible for executing formulation projects across multiple dosage forms, ensuring product stability, potency, and manufacturability. The individual will collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring high-quality, science-based products from concept to commercialization. The individual is required to follow cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices), all Standard Operating Procedures, and Food Safety Regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

Formulation Development

• Design and develop probiotic and nutraceutical formulations, including blends containing live microorganisms, prebiotics, vitamins, minerals, and functional ingredients
• Select appropriate excipients and carriers to support stability, viability, and performance
• Develop formulations for capsules, powders, sachets, and stick packs
• Conduct compatibility assessments between probiotic strains and other ingredients Process Development & Scale-Up
• Support scale-up of formulations from bench to pilot and commercial production
• Collaborate with Manufacturing to optimize blending, encapsulation, and packaging processes
• Assist in troubleshooting formulation and process-related challenges (e.g., flowability, moisture sensitivity, segregation) Stability & Shelf-Life
• Execute stability studies to ensure products meet label claim through shelf life
• Monitor environmental impacts on probiotic viability (temperature, humidity, oxygen)
• Support selection of appropriate packaging solutions Regulatory & Documentation

Part 111/117 and internal quality standards

• Prepare and maintain formulation documentation, specifications, and technical reports
• Support regulatory submissions and documentation as needed Research & Innovation
• Stay informed on emerging ingredients, probiotic strains, and formulation technologies
• Evaluate new raw materials for functionality and quality
• Contribute ideas for new product development and formulation improvements Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Work closely with Quality, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain teams to support product development and commercialization
• Provide technical input to internal stakeholders and customer-facing teams when needed

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

• M.S. or Ph.D. in Food Science, Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, or related field
• 3-7+ years of experience in nutraceutical, probiotic, or dietary supplement formulation Technical Skills
• Understanding of probiotic stability and viability considerations
• Experience with excipient functionality and formulation techniques
• Familiarity with solid oral dosage forms and powder systems
• Working knowledge of GMP requirements Core Competencies
