The Chemist will be working as a member of an integrated team responsible for maintaining and sustaining the United States Air Force Test Operations and Sustainment efforts. Open to internal and external candidates Job Summary The Chemical and Metallurgical Services Group is seeking a highly qualified Chemical Lab Subject Matter Expert to provide technical direction to the Chemistry Lab staff in safely performing analytical testing in support of the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC) mission, identifying, overseeing, developing and documenting training of analysts, and updating and maintaining the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This job is a working supervisor, supervising the lab operations while at times serving as a laboratory chemist.

Job Duties:

Provide supervision, oversight and technical direction to the Chemistry Lab staff in safely performing analytical testing in support of the AEDC mission, identifying, overseeing, developing and documenting training of analysts, and updating and maintaining- the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

Lead the development, review, approval, execution and update of lab policies, procedures, and analytical processes.

Responsible for obtaining and maintaining accreditations by the State of Tennessee- Department of Environment & Conservation, the American Industrial Hygiene Association and the Department of Defense Joint Oil Analysis Program (JOAP).

Responsible for the implementation and maintenance of the Chemistry Laboratory Quality Assurance Program.

Assist in developing and managing the lab operating budget

Plan and serve as the Quality Assurance Officer. Perform data quality reviews on all reported test results. Ensure internal and external quality control studies (MDL, RDL, MRL, DMRQA, JOAP, WP, WS, PAT) are performed and documented.

Monitor and update quality control limits.

Serve as the internal chemistry consultant, the point-of-contact for all internal and external audits and the key lead for developing response to audit deficiencies and corrective action plans.

Implement the Chemical Hygiene Plan and serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer.

Identify future equipment and material needs. Determine scheduling of analytical tests and prioritize conflicts in schedule.

Ensure functional readiness of lab to support testing needs, including equipment readiness, personnel capabilities, and use of outside lab services when needed.

Responsible for the safety of lab personnel / visitors. Manage lab housekeeping and maintenance of non-calibrated equipment / instruments.

Assists the Branch in cultivating a flexible and versatile workforce.

Basic Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in Chemistry.
  • Minimum 10 years of working experience in an analytical chemistry laboratory using multiple analytical instruments (such as HPLC, GC-MS, or ICP-OES).
  • Experience operating analytical laboratory instrumentation, developing new analytical methods, troubleshooting malfunctioning instrumentation, and interpreting analytical data.
  • Due to Air Force Security requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required for employment at AEDC. Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree in chemistry preferred.

Hands-on experience in bulk asbestos analysis, fiber counts, metals, solvents and gravimetrics; quality assurance / control experience with ISO 17025S or other quality standards associated with laboratory protocols and extensive experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).

Laboratory management experience in an accredited analytical chemistry laboratory.

Strong and collaborative work ethic.

Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations and refers to the amount BNH is willing to pay at the time of this posting.
