Overview:
This one-year advanced fellowship provides immersive training in the full spectrum of hypertension care and preventive cardiology. Hosted at the AHA-certified Comprehensive Hypertension Center-founded and directed by Dr. Delgado-Lelievre-the program delivers nationally recognized excellence in diagnosis, innovation, and prevention. Fellows gain clinical expertise, procedural training in renal artery denervation (RDN), scholarly development, and board preparation for Hypertension Specialist certification. Curriculum/responsibilities Hypertension Clinics (45%) Under supervision, fellows manage hypertension as a multidimensional disease in diverse clinical settings.
Core Objectives:
  • Non-Pharmacologic:
    DASH diet, sodium reduction, lifestyle.
  • Pharmacologic:
    Drug mechanisms, sequencing, phenotype-based tailoring.
  • Interventional:
    Integration of RDN and device-based options.
  • Phenotyping:
    ABPM, renin/aldosterone levels, vascular stiffness.
  • Secondary Hypertension:
    Aldosteronism, RAS, pheochromocytoma, Cushing's.
  • Family Risk:
    Early screening, preventive strategies.
  • Risk Management:
    Stratification using PREVENT and ASCVD tools. Renal Artery Denervation Training (30%) Under supervision, fellows:
  • Complete an intensive didactic RDN course
  • Assist in ≥15 RDN procedures
  • Conduct simulation training and trial participation
  • Undergo mid-year and final procedural assessments Research & Scholarly Output (20%)
  • Produce one of the following: review article, original study, or case report
  • Receive mentorship for abstract submission and publication
  • Present at national scientific meetings Didactic Curriculum (5-10%)
  • Weekly lectures: hemodynamics, lifestyle medicine, pharmacogenomics, minority health
  • Weekly Grand Rounds and Journal Club
  • Interdisciplinary case conferences with nephrology, cardiology, OBGYN, IR 5. Mandatory Rotations (6-8 weeks)
  • All fellows will complete mandatory rotations in Preventive Cardiology, encompassing diabetes management, lipidology, clinical nutrition, and cardiovascular rehabilitation.
  • These rotations will be hosted within our Comprehensive Preventive Cardiology Program, providing fellows with a holistic foundation in cardiovascular risk reduction.
  • Advanced cardiovascular imaging will be incorporated in the fellows curriculum. 6. Elective Rotations (6-8 weeks)
  • Interventional Radiology:
    Participate in AVS, lateralization discussions, aldosteronism pathway
  • Obstetrics:
    Manage preeclampsia, eclampsia, postpartum HTN
Nephrology:
Hypertension in CKD, dialysis, and fluid regulation Additional Clinical Enrichment The fellowship further integrates: In-depth exposure to ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), central aortic pressure assessment, and home BP technologies. Clinical informatics tools for hypertension registry analysis, care quality improvement, and real-time BP monitoring. Emphasis on social determinants of health and community-level risk mitigation. Fellow-led teaching sessions for internal medicine residents and students to promote hypertension education. Participation in institutional quality improvement initiatives, including hypertensive emergency protocols and medication reconciliation. Case-based learning with interdisciplinary faculty from cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology, and behavioral medicine. Capstone & Certification
  • Board review course and for the American Hypertension Specialist Certification Program
  • Capstone Presentation:
    research, procedural innovation, or case series
  • Final faculty evaluation and certification
Qualifications:
    Education:
    MD or equivalent degree. Completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Radiology, or other relevant specialties.
      Licensure:
      Must be eligible for licensure in the state of Florida.
        Skills:
        Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
