Position Overview:

The Refinery Environmental Specialist is responsible for supporting environmental compliance programs at a refinery facility. This role helps ensure operations comply with applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, permits, company standards, and site procedures. The position provides technical guidance to refinery operations, maintenance, and leadership teams on environmental requirements related to air, water, waste, spill prevention, reporting, inspections, and environmental stewardship.

Schedule:

Our facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This position work shift is days M-F. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain refinery environmental programs, policies, procedures, records, and compliance documentation.
• Monitor and evaluate refinery operations for compliance with air, water, waste, stormwater, and spill prevention requirements.
• Prepare, review, and submit routine environmental reports, permit applications, compliance certifications, and agency correspondence.
• Support hazardous waste determinations, waste profiling, manifesting, storage inspections, and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act compliance activities.
• Assist with Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure plans, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans, Facility Response Plans, and related inspection and training requirements.
• Perform data collection, calculations, trend analysis, quality checks, and recordkeeping for environmental monitoring and reporting.
• Provide environmental guidance for refinery projects, process changes, maintenance activities, chemical changes, and management of change reviews.
• Coordinate or participate in internal audits, regulatory inspections, incident investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective action tracking.
• Communicate with regulatory agencies, contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders in a professional and accurate manner.
• Promote a safe, environmentally responsible work culture and support continuous improvement in environmental performance. Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in environmental science, engineering, chemistry, biology, occupational safety, or a related technical field preferred.
• Experience in environmental compliance, refinery operations, petrochemical manufacturing, industrial facilities, or regulatory reporting preferred.
• Working knowledge of environmental regulations and programs, including Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, SPCC, stormwater, wastewater, and hazardous waste requirements.
• Ability to read, interpret, and apply permits, regulations, technical procedures, and environmental data.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with operations personnel, management, contractors, and regulatory representatives.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn site-specific environmental tracking systems.
• Valid driver's license and ability to access field locations within the refinery as required. Preferred Qualifications
• Two or more years of environmental compliance experience in a refinery, terminal, chemical plant, or heavy industrial environment.
• Experience supporting regulatory inspections, agency audits, environmental sampling, or compliance reporting.
• Familiarity with HAZWOPER, incident response, environmental auditing, and management of change processes.
• Knowledge of air emissions calculations, wastewater discharge requirements, hazardous waste management, and spill response procedures. Key Competencies

Working Conditions This position requires work in both in the office and in the refinery field environment. The employee may be required to wear personal protective equipment, climb stairs or ladders, walk through process units, respond to environmental incidents, and support work outside normal business hours when necessary. Work may involve exposure to industrial equipment, weather conditions, noise, and refinery operating areas.
