Job Title:
Project Environmental Scientist Job Description The Project Environmental Scientist manages complex environmental investigation and remediation projects from inception through completion, ensuring technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and strong client relationships. This role combines hands-on project delivery, field oversight, and technical analysis with leadership responsibilities, including mentoring junior staff and supporting business development efforts. The position offers the opportunity to work on a variety of site investigation, remediation, and redevelopment projects, including Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments and PFAS-focused work, within a collaborative, hybrid work environment. Responsibilities Manage environmental investigation and remediation projects from start to finish, including planning, execution, reporting, and closeout. Perform complex technical analyses for specific portions of broader engineering and environmental projects, ensuring accurate and defensible results. Supervise and coordinate field activities, including site recovery, hazardous waste investigations, and soil and groundwater investigations, while ensuring correct interpretation of findings. Oversee the implementation of remediation activities and industrial/brownfield site redevelopment tasks in accordance with project objectives and regulatory requirements. Manage and deliver multiple projects and tasks simultaneously within defined budgets, schedules, and quality standards. Organize, write, and edit draft proposals, technical reports, and other project documents in a clear, concise, and professional manner. Participate in identifying and pursuing new clients and project opportunities, and help develop additional work within existing projects and client relationships. Attend business development meetings with new and existing clients, representing the firm in a professional and technically credible manner. Provide direct oversight and management of junior staff on specific project assignments, including coaching, training, and motivating team members working on environmental projects. Participate in interviewing and hiring staff to support the growth of the environmental practice, particularly at the mid-level. Coordinate with other work groups across office locations and disciplines as needed to deliver integrated project solutions. Interface effectively and professionally with clients, contractors, subcontractors, internal staff, project personnel, and supervisors to support successful project outcomes. Support Phase I and Phase II environmental due diligence projects, with at least one role having a specific focus on PFAS-related investigations and remediation. Perform other related duties as requested to support the environmental practice and overall project delivery. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or Environmental Engineering. 7-10 years of related environmental consulting or equivalent work experience. Proficiency in environmental due diligence, including Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments. Demonstrated experience managing remediation projects from start to finish. Hazwoper training. Strong understanding of New Jersey (NJ) and Pennsylvania (PA) environmental regulatory requirements. Hands-on experience in site recovery and hazardous waste investigations. Experience conducting soil and groundwater investigations and implementing remediation strategies. Experience with industrial and brownfield site redevelopment projects. Ability to supervise field activities and correctly interpret environmental data and findings. Strong written communication skills for preparing proposals, reports, and technical documentation. Ability to manage multiple projects and tasks within defined budgets and schedules. Strong interpersonal skills to interface effectively and professionally with clients, contractors, subcontractors, and internal teams. Ability to coach, train, and motivate junior staff on environmental projects. Additional Skills & Qualifications Master's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. Professional certifications such as PG, PE, LSRP, or LEED AP. Project management experience, including coordinating multidisciplinary teams and cross-office collaboration. Advanced technical expertise in geology, environmental science, or environmental engineering. Experience with PFAS-related site investigations and remediation is highly desirable for one of the openings. Interest in contributing to business development efforts and strengthening client relationships. Desire to grow within a reputable, employee-owned firm and develop as a mid-level leader under the mentorship of senior technical experts. Work Environment The role is primarily office-based within a hybrid work model, allowing work from home two days per week while maintaining strong collaboration with the in-office team. The Philadelphia office has approximately 90 employees and operates with a small-team structure that includes many senior-level staff, offering close mentorship from experienced professionals such as professional engineers and licensed site remediation professionals. The culture emphasizes professional growth, knowledge sharing, and building a strong mid-level team. The firm is employee-owned, fostering a sense of ownership and long-term commitment. The work involves a mix of office-based tasks, such as analysis, reporting, and client communication, and field-based activities for site investigations and remediation oversight.
