An Environmental Planner or Scientist uses training and background in natural sciences to study the environment and threats to the environment. Investigates environmental problems and advises on solutions. May focus on potential environmental health risks to people, such as unsafe drinking water, or on protecting the environment and ecosystems from human activity such as development and industrial pollution.
This position reports to the Environmental Manager and is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state environmental regulations, Western Extrusions environmental policies, ISO 14001 requirements, and environmental permits.
Responsibilities:
Ensure environmental compliance with federal, state, city, and company regulations and policies by conducting audits and following up with appropriate departmental supervisors/managers Assist in the completion of federal, state, and local environmental reports Support
ISO 14001
management and sustainability reporting Complete environmental sampling and monitoring Obtain and maintain required environmental permits Collect, analyze, and maintain data essential for effective environmental programs Prepare various reports, including charts and graphs, to determine trends and needs Monitor for latest SDS updates from the manufacturers/distributors of chemicals and ensure all new chemical SDS are obtained and available in the SDS database Manage SDS data in the ERA software Ensure environmental records are prepared and available at all times. Ensure all hazardous waste is managed properly Conduct emergency response activities and assist in the cleanup of hazardous spills Performs basic calculations and computer data entry Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with employees, visitors, inspectors, and other personnel. Adhere to all safety and quality guidelines and protocols to maintain a safe working environment including but not limited to adhering to all PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) requirements, immediate incident reporting, and adherence to both Safety Cardinal Rules and Quality Cardinal Rules, among others. Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the team.
Education, Experience, and Abilities:
B.S. in Environmental Engineering, EHS, Environmental Science, Occupational Safety and Health, or related engineering discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of RCRA and Title 5 regulations Familiarity with stormwater, wastewater, and chemical process 3 years of environmental experience in a manufacturing environment preferred Knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental regulations Experience dealing with regulatory representatives and outside parties in a professional manner Strong analytical and project management skills Spill response experience is a plus Valid driver's license Basic computer skills Bilingual (Spanish/English) is preferred Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team. Physical Demands:
The employee in this role will spend 40% of their time in an office setting sitting at a desk while working on a computer, and 60% of their time walking the facility, performing inspections and interacting with employees. Position requires periods of intense physical exertion, including walking, climbing, standing, lifting, and bending while performing assigned duties. The employee will be required to reach with their hands and arms, occasionally balance or climb, and stoop as necessary. The employee will be required to have coordination and manual dexterity to safely operate equipment. Additionally, the employee will need to have the ability to regularly lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted. The job required vision abilities, including close vision for performing detailed tasks, distance vision to see objects clearly at a further distance, and peripheral vision to be aware of surroundings. These visions abilities, among others, are essential to successfully carry out the essential duties and responsibilities of this position.
