Job Description

Gemologist / Appraisal Specialist Blakeman's Fine Jewelry Blakeman's Fine Jewelry is growing—and we're looking for a skilled Gemologist / Appraisal Specialist to join our team. If you're passionate about gemology and enjoy the technical side of the industry, this is a rare opportunity to focus on professional appraisals and gemstone evaluation —without the pressure of a full-time sales role. Why This Role Stands Out Primarily office-based, technical work Minimal sales expectations—focus on your expertise Steady and growing appraisal volume Work with a wide range of jewelry, including estate and inherited pieces Supportive, team-oriented environment What You'll Do Perform detailed gemological evaluations on both in-house and client-owned jewelry Create accurate, professional written appraisals for insurance and documentation purposes Identify diamonds, gemstones, metals, and construction methods with precision Guide clients through appraisal intake and pick-up, especially for estate or inherited items Clearly explain appraisal needs and processes to clients Maintain organized digital records and documentation Collaborate with leadership and sales teams to support overall store success Help improve appraisal turnaround times (currently ~3 weeks) Role Breakdown ~80% Technical / Office Work Gem identification Appraisal writing Documentation and reporting ~20% Client Interaction Intake consultations Pick-up appointments and education What We're Looking For GIA Graduate Gemologist (GG) or equivalent (required) Proven experience completing and signing formal jewelry appraisals Strong technical writing skills and attention to detail Experience with estate, inherited, or outside jewelry is a plus Ability to work independently and manage workload efficiently Comfortable using gemological tools, software, and digital systems The Ideal Candidate You're detail-oriented, efficient, and confident in your gemological expertise. You enjoy working behind the scenes, producing high-quality appraisal work, while still being comfortable stepping in to guide clients when needed.
