Job Description

Transition Metal Solutions is on a mission to meet the critical mineral demand driven by the accelerating energy transition. We are pioneering a solution that enhances metal recovery from low-grade ores and waste stockpiles — extending mine life and reducing the environmental impact of mining and metal extraction. Our platform combines empirical testing, advanced DNA sequencing, and computational methods to develop tailored solutions that harness wild microbial communities to increase metal recovery, while significantly reducing water and energy use. We're a Seed-stage company backed by leading climate, deep tech, and energy investors across the US, Europe, and Australia. With the first iteration of our platform complete, we are now focused on scaling to industrial pilots over the next year. The Role We're looking for an experienced geochemistry / environmental chemistry generalist to accelerate project delivery and R&D throughput as customer demand grows. You'll be mostly responsible for geochemical work but also help with analytical workflows. This is an onsite, full-time position out of Bakar Labs (next to the UC Berkeley Campus), with regular travel to UCB's Richmond Field Station (~20 minutes from campus), where we conduct sample preparation and larger-scale empirical testing work. You will report directly to the Head of R&D and collaborate closely with our molecular and computational biology scientists. This is not an entry-level role. We are looking for a scientist with at least 2 years of industry experience who can work independently from day one with minimal hands-on training. What You'll Do Apply a broad range of analytical methods including ICP-OES, ion chromatography, HPLC, GC, mass spectrometry, and microscopy Method development, validation, and troubleshooting Instrument operation, maintenance and technical problem solving C/N analysis, e.g. , LECO or similar Analysis of chemical speciations ( e.g., Fe species, S species) Ore processing and sample preparation ( e.g. , crushing, sizing, microwave digestion) Geochemical characterization of ores including mineralogical and elemental analysis Using automation tools to increase experimental throughput Geochemical modeling Communicate experimental results to the cross-functional team and external partners Your Experience Ideal candidates possess formal training in geochemistry, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, earth and planetary sciences, or related engineering fields. A PhD with 2-6 years or an MS with 6-8 years of relevant work experience is required. Scientific & Technical Experience (we prefer candidates with experience in several of the following) Minimum 2 years of relevant experience at a mid-size biotech or industrial research organization Experience with geochemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry Industrial experience in elemental analysis (i.e. ICP-OES, ion chromatography) Experience in sample prep for metal analysis Experience in analytical techniques for metabolite detection such as spectrophotometers, HPLC, LC/MS, and GC/MS Experience developing high-throughput screening processes and implementing automated workflows Experience developing scalable workflows and improving workflow efficiency Experience with statistical analysis and DOE in JMP, R, or other statistical analysis software Familiarity with hydrometallurgy workflows Familiarity with process control and monitoring Familiarity with modern SCADA systems, automated flow meters, and online monitoring tools Familiarity with lab automation (i.e. Agilent, Tecan, Beckman, etc.) to enable complicated or high-throughput protocols Familiarity with techno-economic analysis (TEA) Other Attributes Ability to work independently with creativity and strong problem-solving skills Rigorous attention to detail and good documentation skills Ability to communicate effectively with others across departments and disciplines Ability to manage multiple priorities and thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment Working at Transition We're a small, interdisciplinary team of 6. We need someone who thrives in early-stage ambiguity where priorities shift, you help shape direction, and there's a clear strategy but no firm playbook. You should be able to work effectively with colleagues across different backgrounds, training, communication styles, and identities. While the nature of our work and stage requires us to move fast, we are thoughtful rather than reckless and value people who approach difficulties with grace and directness.
