LSUAM ORED - CCT
- Coupled Ocean Modeling Group (Z. George Xue (00010098))Work Location:
2056Digital Media Center Pay Grade:
Other Academic Job Description:
The Postdoctoral Researcher will lead the modeling component of a funded, interdisciplinary research project focused on assessing hurricane-induced seabed instability and submarine mudslide risk in support of nearshore offshore wind farm site selection in coastal Louisiana. The position centers on the development and application of state-of-the-art coupled hydrodynamic, wave, and sediment-geohazard models to quantify seabed response to extreme weather events. The postdoc will further develop a coupled ocean-wave modeling system (ROMS-SWAN within COAWST) to simulate high-resolution hydrodynamics and bottom shear stress during tropical storms and hurricanes, and will integrate these outputs with an advanced submarine mudslide model (BingClaw) to evaluate the initiation, magnitude, and spatial extent of hurricane-driven mudslides. The work directly supports geohazard risk assessment for offshore wind infrastructure and is conducted in close collaboration with academic and industry partners.Job Responsibilities:
Research & Development:
The postdoctoral researcher will develop coupled ocean-wave models (ROMS-SWAN/COAWST) to simulate hurricane-driven hydrodynamics, integrate outputs with a submarine mudslide model (BingClaw), and conduct extreme-event simulations and sensitivity analyses to quantify seabed instability and mudslide risk relevant to offshore wind infrastructure. (65%)Collaboration:
Work with faculty, students, and external partners on interdisciplinary initiatives; contribute to joint problem-solving and co-mentorship of graduate students. (20%)Dissemination:
Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and presentations at national/international conferences. (10%) Other duties as assigned (5%)Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Oceanography, Coastal Engineering, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Geological Sciences, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field. Experience with numerical modeling of coastal or ocean processes, including hydrodynamics and/or waves. Demonstrated ability to run and analyze numerical models, work in a Linux/HPC environment, and use scientific programming tools such as Python, MATLAB, or Fortran.Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in physical oceanography, coastal hydrodynamics, sediment transport, geohazards, or offshore/renewable energy applications. Experience with coupled modeling systems such as ROMS, SWAN, and/or COAWST, storm or hurricane simulations, and analysis of extreme-event impacts. Familiarity with sediment dynamics, seabed stability, or submarine landslide/mudslide modeling (e.g., BingClaw or similar frameworks) is strongly preferred, as is experience integrating multi-model workflows and producing peer-reviewed publications.Additional Job Description:
