Senior Tunnel Engineer / Geologist

LJB Engineering Company, is a national engineering consulting firm currently seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full-time onsite role in the Washington DC area. The ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience working on geotechnical, underground, tunnel projects with direct experience in mapping of rock shafts and tunnels, scanning and surveying of shafts and tunnels, and the interpersonal skills to make a positive impact on our firm and the clients we serve. Compensation:

$140,000 - 195,000 based upon experience, certifications, and regional market standards.

SENIOR TUNNEL ENGINEER / GEOLOGIST ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Provide geologic oversight and interpretation for subsurface construction, including: Bedrock mapping and soil overburden characterizationRock mass classificationMapping and laser scanning of Faults, fractures, joints, and shear zonesGroundwater conditions and hydrogeology Support tunnel, shaft, and underground structure design by interpreting geologic and geotechnical data and identifying geologic risks that may impact constructability, safety, and cost.

Review, interpret, and prepare: Geologic logs and cross sectionsSubsurface investigation reportsGeologic memoranda and technical summariesInput for geotechnical baseline reports (GBRs), if applicable Collaborate closely with geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, construction managers, and inspectors to integrate geologic findings into design and construction decisions.

Provide construction-phase geologic support, which may include: Observing and documenting exposed bedrock during excavationVerifying geologic conditions against design assumptionsRecommending adjustments to support systems or excavation methods based on observed conditionsEvaluate groundwater impacts, seepage conditions, and potential inflow risks; coordinate with hydrogeologic analyses and mitigation strategiesSupport the construction operation with whatever other site operations may need. Participate in risk identification and risk management, including contributing to hazard analyses related to tunneling, shafts, and subsurface infrastructure.

Ensure geologic work complies with applicable requirements of state agencies and other stakeholders.

Prepare and review technical documentation for regulatory submissions, design reviews, and stakeholder coordination.

Provide technical input during design reviews, coordination meetings, and construction meetings with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies.

Field based assignments will include weekdays, night, and weekend work. Office based assignments will require a standard weekday business hours work schedule.

SENIOR TUNNEL ENGINEER / GEOLOGIST ESSENTIAL CREDENTIALS

Education:

Bachelor's degree in relevant area of study required (Geological/Geotechnical or related field), master's degree preferred.

Professional geologist (PG) license in the state of New York is required.

Qualifications:

10+ years of relevant experience.

Excellent problem solving, decision making and teamwork skills.

Excellent technical writing skills and attention to detail.

Excellent communication skills, a thorough knowledge of relevant technical codes, operations, processes, and trends.

Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, contractors, and clients.

Ability to work independently, exercise independent judgment, interact with other staff, collaborate with other disciplines, and mentor junior staff.
