Job Title:
Geological Specialist Job Description The Geological Specialist performs hands-on field and office work to support environmental assessments, remediation projects, and regulatory compliance initiatives. This role focuses on collecting and analyzing subsurface and environmental data, preparing technical documentation, and contributing to Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments. The position is ideal for someone with a strong technical background in geology or related fields, practical field experience, and a passion for environmental stewardship. Responsibilities Collect soil, rock, sediment, groundwater, surface water, and air samples in accordance with regulatory standards and project-specific requirements. Support and perform Phase I Environmental Site Investigations, including data collection, site research, and documentation. Assist with drilling oversight, including logging soil borings, monitoring well installation, and coordinating with drilling contractors. Conduct site reconnaissance and environmental inspections to identify potential environmental concerns and document site conditions. Perform groundwater monitoring and field testing using appropriate equipment and standardized procedures. Follow all health and safety procedures on active job sites, including adherence to site-specific safety plans and regulatory guidelines. Assist in subsurface and geotechnical investigations, including geotechnical analysis and interpretation of soil and groundwater conditions. Document field activities thoroughly, including field notes, photos, and observations, and maintain organized project files and logs. Assist with the preparation of technical reports, tables, figures, and appendices to support environmental and geotechnical projects. Help prepare Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments by compiling field data, historical information, and analytical results. Support environmental compliance efforts related to remediation, landfill operations, and other regulated activities as assigned. Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists to deliver high-quality environmental and geotechnical project outcomes. Essential Skills Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Science, or a closely related discipline. Approximately 1 year of relevant field experience in Phase I or Phase II environmental work preferred; internship experience counts toward this requirement. Strong technical writing and documentation skills, including the ability to prepare clear field notes and contribute to technical reports. Field experience with soil sampling, groundwater sampling, and environmental sampling techniques. Knowledge of geology, environmental science, and basic geotechnical and subsurface investigation principles. Ability and willingness to spend up to 80% of work time in the field when needed. training. Ability to travel to job sites in the Buffalo area and occasionally to Jamestown. Demonstrated ability to follow health and safety procedures on active construction and remediation sites. Additional Skills & Qualifications Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus. Familiarity with hazardous, toxic, and radioactive waste (HTRW) projects is desirable. Experience or exposure to radiological remediation and landfill operations is beneficial. Experience with geotechnical analysis, geotechnical investigations, and subsurface investigations is an advantage. Experience supporting environmental compliance activities is a plus. Comfort working within multidisciplinary teams of engineers and scientists. Strong organizational skills, including maintaining structured project files, logs, and documentation. Attention to detail and a methodical approach to sampling, logging, and reporting. Work Environment The role offers a balanced mix of field and office work, with approximately 50% of time spent on project sites and 50% in an office setting. Field work includes visiting active construction, remediation, and environmental investigation sites in and around Buffalo, with occasional travel to Jamestown and other locations in New York State. Field activities may involve working outdoors in varying weather conditions, around drilling equipment, monitoring wells, and other subsurface investigation operations, while following strict health and safety protocols. Office work involves data analysis, technical writing, preparing reports and figures, and collaborating closely with engineers and scientists. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Buffalo, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
